Doctoral student in ecosystem gas exchange and ecosystem services of grasslands

The Grassland Sciences Group is a vibrant and international working group at the Department of Environmental Systems Science at ETH Zurich. We are looking for a reliable, enthusiastic and highly motivated doctoral student with a passion for science to join our team. Our research focuses on process- and system-understanding of the biosphere-atmosphere greenhouse gas exchange and its drivers in forests and agroecosystems as well as on the provisioning of ecosystem services in temperate grasslands.

Project background

The doctoral project is part of the interdisciplinary project InsuranceGrass “Assessment of formal, natural and social insurances: how to cope best with impacts of extreme events on grasslands for sustainable farming systems?”, carried out with four doctoral students in Switzerland and in Germany. The project addresses the potential role of natural, financial, and social insurance mechanisms to cope with increasing climate extremes, identifies interdependencies between insurance types, and derives recommendations for optimal policies (for further info: https://gl.ethz.ch/research/pepb/insurancegrass.html).

Job description

The doctoral project will focus on the impacts of climate extremes on the provision of ecosystem services (both marketable and non-marketable) by permanent grasslands in Germany and Switzerland, based on long-term observations and field experiments. Existing and on-going field studies will be used. Thus, the main tasks of the doctoral student include i) maintenance of a flux measurement station in Switzerland, ii) compilation and analysis of data on ecosystem services provided by permanent grasslands as a function of management intensity and plant biodiversity, iii) characterisation of past climate extremes in terms of magnitude and timing, and iv) assessment of impacts of extreme events on temperate permanent grasslands with varying management intensity and plant diversity. The full-time position is funded for 3 years. Salary and social benefits are provided according to ETH Zurich rules.

Your profile

Upon start, applicants must have a completed Master’s degree in environmental sciences, ecology or a closely related science field, with experiences in micrometeorology, biogeochemistry, plant ecophysiology and/or quantification of ecosystem services. Applicants must have very good statistical skills, experience with large data sets, and programming experience (e.g. in R or Python). A good standard of written and spoken English as well as a driver’s license are mandatory. Good writing skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment are expected.
