Professor or Associate Professor (tenure track) in Sport Sciences

 


The employment relationship will start on 1 March 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The professorship is based on an employment contract concluded for an indeterminate term and the associate professorship on a contract for a fixed term of five years.

The discipline of social sciences of sport trains academic professionals and experts for the constantly changing organisational networks of sports, physical activity and leisure. The objective of education in the social sciences of sport is to understand sport, exercise, and overall physical activity as broad social phenomena that change over the course of time. Our teaching is based on the scientific traditions of sport sociology as well as sport policy and administration.

Tasks and qualifications

The professor / associate professor is in charge of leading and developing broad-based research, teaching and societal interaction related to the social sciences of sport. Applicants are expected to have evidence or interest in specialising in the following central areas of expertise required in the position: sociological phenomena of physical activity; the organisation of physical activity as operations of the public, private and third sectors and as part of welfare policy; and evaluation research on physical activity. The person selected for the position is expected to deepen these subareas scientifically and to conduct independent research utilising the research infrastructure offered by the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences and networks in the field.

In addition, the professor / associate professor will participate in providing bachelor’s and master’s education, the supervision of theses and dissertations, doctoral education, the development of multidisciplinary research activities, and the acquisition of research funding granted on the basis of quality. Familiarity with the national and international decision-making systems related to sport, physical activity and welfare policy is regarded as an advantage for the applicant.  

The professor is expected to have a doctoral degree in social sciences and solid scientific qualifications. Further requirements include extensive experience in teaching and the supervision of doctoral dissertations and postdoctoral research, broad experience in leading research, and strong evidence of national and international cooperation in the field of research as well as of acquiring research funding.

The person appointed to the associate professorship is expected to have a doctoral degree in social sciences and strong evidence of the ability to conduct and publish international scientific research. The selected person must have active international cooperation networks and experience of the supervision of doctoral dissertations, acquisition of research funding, leading research activities, and research-based teaching.

Salary 

The salary is based on the job demands level and the employee’s personal performance, in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. For the position of associate professor, a trial period of six months will be used.
