Responsibilities

Research associates will be expected primarily to teach and conduct research. The research associate will also have the opportunity to pursue further academic qualifications, in particular a doctoral dissertation. At least one-third of set working hours will be made available for the research associate’s own academic work.

Specific Duties

  • investigate tree responses to experimental drought in a wet tropical forest in Puerto Rico (Luquillo Experimental Forest) together with an international team of scientists
  • explore important root functional traits (root and hyphal growth and lifespan and their depth distribution) by image analysis
  • study C partitioning to leaves and roots in response to drought
  • establish a greenhouse experiment in Hamburg with the same tropical tree species to investigate the root drought strategies of saplings / young trees under controlled climate conditions
  • teach at the bachelor and master level (2 teaching hours p/w)
  • write and publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals
  • present results at national and international conferences

Requirements

A university degree in a relevant field.

Strong skills in root or mycorrhizal ecology, biogeochemistry, and/or image analyses are a plus. Team-orientation and interest in conducting interdisciplinary research as well as being proactive. Willingness for field work in the Luquillo Experimental Forest in Puerto Rico. Excellent German and English communication skills (spoken and written). Basic Spanish communication skills are a plus.
