JOB DESCRIPTION

Job description

This PhD project will address needs for more socio-technical and transformative approaches to engineering and science education to cope with the increasing complexity of technological systems as well as the urgency of sustainable development. Research will be within Engineering and Science Education with a specific focus on how higher educational institutions can cross boundaries and co-create cross-cutting educational innovations in the technology and Science (T&S) domain.

The PhD position will be related to the activities in the Task force “Learning and Teaching” in CESAER (www.cesaer.org).  The ambition with this task force is to join forces across institutions to exhibit leadership, share experiences and co-construct new experiments to accelerate the needed change in engineering education for transformative learning and sustainable development of our societies. In this setting, the PhD position will provide the opportunity to explore and contribute to cross-institutional activities e.g. in a design-based research format. The boundary crossing includes analysis, interaction and inputs to the CESAER community in order to combine insights from a multitude of cultures, educational approaches, disciplines and teaching practices.

The position will be related to the Aalborg Centre for Problem Based Learning in Engineering Science and Sustainability under the auspices of UNESCO (www.ucpbl.net) as part of the Institute for Advanced Study in Problem Based Learning (IAS PBL).

Teaching will primarily be related to the course Problem Based Learning in Science, Technology and Society, which is offered at all engineering and science bachelor programmes at Aalborg University.

The successful candidate has an education and experience related to T&S. Expertise in doing empirical studies and using qualitative methods is a requirement. A high proficiency in oral and written English is required. Good dissemination skills are important.

The application can be submitted in English or Danish. We prioritize applicants who, additional to a motivation letter, diplomas and curriculum vitae, submit a project proposal (i.e. a project description which is not regarded as final but a proposal). The project proposal must be max 5 pages (not including references). The project proposal must include

1) a research motivation

2) a short presentation of expected theories to be used in investigating progression in PBL competences

3) a short presentation of methods to be used in conducting the empirical study

4) a work plan describing the main phases of the study
