At Chalmers you will have access to excellent materials analysis facilities including electron microscopy and strong links to MAX IV and European Spallation Source (ESS) as well as a large research community with a strong interest in the utilization of these techniques. This situation will provide you with outstanding opportunities to develop a strong independent research profile around discovery of sustainable materials using state-of-the-art infrastructure. At the same time there will be many opportunities for collaboration both inside Chalmers and with other universities in WISE.

The WISE program
Thanks to the support from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation the Wallenberg Initiative Material Science for Sustainability (WISE) was launched in 2022. WISE is a research program to enable sustainable technologies with impact on our society by understanding, creating, and controlling complex materials with a precision down to the single atom level. Although the production and extraction of materials are connected to environmental strain, their use is paramount in transforming our world towards a sustainable society. Functional materials are simply the most important parameter in the effort to accomplish green growth, since they form the physical components of future, greener technologies and circular economies.

The program will recruit 15 eminent young group leaders as WISE Fellows in 2022, and also support PhD and postdoctoral positions within both academia and industry. The Fellows will be recruited to the 7 participating host universities/organizations, enabling them to thrive in strong local research environments as well as in the national WISE program. Read more about WISE here.

Each WISE Fellow will receive a recruitment package to cover 4 years of salary, two PhD students and two postdoc positions. The Fellow positions are tenure-track, and the universities/organizations will assume the long-term responsibility of their support as tenured faculty.

Environment
Materials science at Chalmers is a national strategic research environment anchored in a long tradition of outstanding research. The research community is shaped by the vision “A sustainable society through excellence in materials science” and includes around 80 senior researchers with core activities at four departments (Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Industrial and Materials Science, Microtechnology and Nanoscience as well as Physics). We provide access to state-of-the-art instrumentation at Chalmers Materials Analysis Laboratory and the clean room facility as well as strong collaborations within national infrastructure networks. With our research, education, and innovation activities, we address societal challenges and include all the important elements of advanced materials research: theory and modeling, synthesis, characterization, and evaluation.

While the advertised position will most likely be placed at the Department of Physics, which has long-standing traditions in method development and utilization in this area, the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience could also be excellent hosts, depending on the background of and the research proposed by you.

Major responsibilities
You will conduct research in line with the intentions described in your application. We want you to complement rather than duplicate our existing competences, and that you have an ambition to create synergies between existing research groups, at Chalmers as well as within the WISE framework.

As an Assistant Professor, you will contribute with:
- Active engagement in research, developing a distinct line of research through independent research projects.
- Active participation in education.
- Supervising undergraduate and graduate students.
- Applying for external research funding.
- Participating in joint departmental and university-wide activities.
- Seeking international collaborations on a high scientific level.
- Collaborating with research groups within and outside of Chalmers.

Contract terms
The appointment as Assistant Professor is a four-year, entry-level, faculty position with tenure track, whereby you will acquire both pedagogical and research qualifications. An Assistant Professor is expected to improve their ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop their skills in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent study. The aim is to achieve the level of Associate Professor within four years and, if successful, you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers.

Qualifications
We are looking for a motivated candidate who have the ambition to build a leading independent research group at the cutting edge of your research area, who can attract external funding and have a strong interest in education. You are open-minded and interested in collaborating across borders inside and outside of Chalmers, and in the WISE framework. At least one postdoc period outside the institution where you performed your PhD is required.  Interest and experience in teaching and supervision are meritorious. Teamwork, leadership, organizational and entrepreneurial skills are advantageous.

You have:
- A doctoral degree in material science, physics or chemistry, not older than 7 years prior to the application deadline of August 15, 2022.**
- Relevant postdoctoral experience.
- Documented electron microscopy experience.
- Demonstrated ability to perform excellent and independent research.
- Demonstrated ability to establish national and international collaborations.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.

If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
