Postdoctoral / Research Fellow

Term: Full time, Fixed term (up to 26 months), willing to consider part-time arrangement for right candidate.

  • A fantastic career opportunity for an early- to mid-career researcher to join Australia’s #1 University
  • Undertake independent and impactful research with local communities in regional Australia on the social and institutional dimensions of flooding and effective flood risk management to build resilience
  • Become part of a dynamic interdisciplinary team with a positive culture contributing towards societal transformation.

ANU has recently commenced a national initiative funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Agency (NRRA) - Partnering with local communities in regional Australia to increase resilience to flood risk. A key objective is to partner with several regional communities to develop a framework and process to evaluate options for minimizing the impacts of floods on communities. Australia is very exposed to damage caused by extreme rainfall. The challenges of flood risk management are being compounded by climate change, exposing vulnerabilities in flood risk management strategies that have been implemented over the past century. With an increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events due to climate change, we need to learn from these experiences and prepare better for floods. Effective flood risk management is critical to limit future losses. To address flood risks and impacts, existing flood management strategies must be augmented by new nature-based options that consider and create systemic co-benefits and consider the likely future climatic conditions associated with climate change. A strong focus of this research will also be to develop Australian guidelines for integration of natural asset-based approaches to flood resilience.

This position will be part of an interdisciplinary team and will have experience in participatory social research, policy and institutional mapping and analysis; and the ability to engage with risk and economic assessment.
