ANU has recently commenced a national initiative funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Agency (NRRA) - Partnering with local communities in regional Australia to increase resilience to flood risk. A key objective is to partner with several regional communities to develop a framework and process to evaluate options for minimizing the impacts of floods on communities. Australia is very exposed to damage caused by extreme rainfall. The challenges of flood risk management are being compounded by climate change, exposing vulnerabilities in flood risk management strategies that have been implemented over the past century. With an increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events due to climate change, we need to learn from these experiences and prepare better for floods. Effective flood risk management is critical to limit future losses. To address flood risks and impacts, existing flood management strategies must be augmented by new nature-based options that consider and create systemic co-benefits and consider the likely future climatic conditions associated with climate change. A strong focus of this research will also be to develop Australian guidelines for integration of natural asset-based approaches to flood resilience.
This position will be part of an interdisciplinary team and will have experience in participatory social research, policy and institutional mapping and analysis; and the ability to engage with risk and economic assessment.
Position overview
This position is a joint appointment between two leading ANU Schools and Institutes: the Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions (ICEDS) and the Fenner School of Environment & Society. The role will also work very closely with academics in the Crawford School of Public Policy. We are seeking to fill one Postdoctoral Fellow (Academic Level A) OR one Research Fellow (Academic Level B) position (role descriptions for each level are outlined sequentially in the attached document).
The Postdoctoral / Research Fellow will work within an interdisciplinary team across ANU as well as with a number of regional communities and a multi-stakeholder Advisory Group on the initiative - Partnering with local communities in regional Australia to increase resilience to flood risk. This funded initiative prioritises real-world outcomes and positive societal impact. Accordingly, the role will be expected to engage across multiple dimensions of the project including, but not limited to, research. The role will be directly responsible for delivering the project outputs and outcomes.
Whilst the role has a strong focus on research, they will also make some contributions to education and service (especially outreach and engagement regarding the research).
To excel in this role, you will have a PhD in the social sciences, human geography, environmental policy studies and / or environmental economics or a similar field, with a track record of independent research. You will demonstrate experience in articulating and prosecuting innovative research in environmental policy matters of national or international relevance and a vision for the activities you would undertake at ANU. (Differing levels of experience are required for applications at Level A and B.)
