The School of Computing has a strong foundation in computing and information sciences at ANU. We are a transformative centre for research in artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer systems and software, and theoretical foundations of computing. We span traditional and modern thinking, connecting decades of computer science methodologies with modern data and computational science. The SmartSat CRC ( https://smartsatcrc.com/ ) is a consortium of universities and other research organisations, partnered with industry that has been funded by the Australian Government to develop know-how and technologies in advanced telecommunications and IoT connectivity, intelligent satellite systems and Earth observation next generation data services. The impact of this research will be to develop intellectual property and a specialist industry expertise that will spawn new businesses, create export economic value and generate new high-tech jobs for all Australians.

The ANU Institute for Space ( https://inspace.anu.edu.au ) is the gateway to university-wide space capability via a single innovation institute. The institute resides in the ANU DVCR&I portfolio.

Position overview 

This position is a fixed term for a period of 5 years appointment to contribute to world leading high impact research with a strong focus on the SmartSat CRC areas of interest.

  • Advanced Satellite Systems, Sensors & Intelligence
  • Next Generation Earth Observation Data Services


Enabling research for these themes include artificial intelligence, security and resilience, and space governance.

The Professor will be responsible for undertaking and fostering world leading high impact research, actively seeking and securing significant external funding to support major research initiatives. A substantial start-up package will be made available to the Chair to be used in agreement with SmartSat in the development and delivery of SmartSat R&D projects which deliver on the SmartSat research milestones, building capability and developing proposals in attracting additional funding for SmartSat and the ANU.
