Postdoctoral Fellow for Research Project DiNoBord

The Department of Business IT, ITU, is seeking a postdoctoral fellow for the research project “Digital Nordic Borders - Unpacking the contention between openness and security in the Nordic region: Digital public surveillance practices at three state borders” funded by the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland (Svenska litteratursällskapet in Finland) and coordinated by the University of Gothenburg. The position will be supervised by ITU which will be the official employer.

This project focuses on one of the main sites of contention between Nordic openness and security, namely new practices of digital public surveillance at Nordic borders. Borders are objects of national and international efforts of surveillance, with increasingly advanced technologies, and as such, symbols of the contention between Nordic openness and security.

The proposed starting date is September 1, 2023. An earlier or later start date may be negotiated. The position runs for a total of 24 months.

The candidate will participate in conducting research on how digital surveillance is practiced and organized at the Danish-Swedish border and which and how advanced digital technologies are produced, procured, and used in surveillance practices. The postdoctoral project is expected to provide comprehensive evidence-based multi-disciplinary knowledge on practices of digital public surveillance in the Øresund region, with a particular focus on the bridge and Kastrup. Moreover, the postdoc is expected to assist the Norwegian partner in conducting fieldwork along the Norwegian-Swedish border.

The candidate will be expected to participate in workshops that translate research findings into public debate and gather civil society around the issues addressed in this project. The candidate is not expected to be a native Scandinavian speaker but to be able to interview and do observations among native Danish and Norwegian speakers is an advantage. Given the nature of the fieldwork, it is important that the candidate has good experience of doing qualitative research, including ethical aspects. Driving license is also a good merit.

The postdoctoral fellow will be employed by ITU and will be mainly carry out fieldwork in Kastrup, Öresund Bridge and secondarily at the Norwegian-Swedish border. Apart from conducting the above-mentioned research, the chosen applicant will be asked to teach or co-teach in at least one course related to their academic background.
