Postdoctoral Fellow in Modelling of Ocean and Climate evolution through time

Stockholm University is a leading European university in one of the world’s most dynamic capitals. The University has more than 29 000 students, 1 400 doctoral students and 5 700 staff members active within the natural sciences and humanities.

The Department of Geological Sciences is a department within the Faculty of Science with courses at master's, bachelor's and orientation levels. The department supports a broad range of basic research within marine geoscience, geochemistry and classical geology. This position is in collaboration with colleagues in the Bolin Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), a Stockholm-based mutli-discipliniary consortium of over 400 scientists that conduct research in climate science.

Project description
The large-scale ocean circulation has a substantional influence on regional and global climate, yet there is still little understanding what determines the transient or final state of the mean ocean circulation, resulting in large uncertainties associated with its role in future climate.

Not understanding the control of the deep ocean circulation as it evolves through time is of obvious concern due to its societal impact, but it also forms a glaring gap in basic research in Geoscience.

This research project aims to make a giant leap forward in filling this gap through systematically modelling the ocean's evolution associated with climate and paleogeographic changes spanning the last 300 million years.

Focus will be on time periods where large climate transitions occured, and understanding the forcing processes of those transitions. These include the extinction events of the Permian-Triassic boundary (~250 million years ago, ma) and the early Jurassic (~83 ma), the glaciation of Antarctica at the Eocene-Oligocene Transition (~34 ma) and the Miocene-Pliocene cooling and increase in plant biomass (8-6 ma).

The project will make use of the NCAR model CESM1.2, which is well tested for a variety of past climate periods. This postdoctoral researcher will work as part of an inter-disciplinary team of experts on physical oceanography, paleoclimate modelling and paleoclimate reconstructions of ocean circulation.

The project is supported by Getech, a Geoenergy & Green Hydrogen Company, who are also supplying the paleogeographies for the various time-slices. These state-of-the-art paleogeographies comprise a valuable resource of the project.

Main responsibilities
The primary task will be to adapt the coupled model CESM1.2 to simulate a series of ocean and climate states across the last ~300 million years. The results will be compared to available proxies for past climates and previous modelling studies.

The successful candidate will also evaluate and compare the role of solar forcing, greenhouse gas forcing and paleogeographic changes in driving the major climate transitions in the past. Results are expected to be published in international high-quality peer-reviewed journals.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree, in oceanography, meteorology, applied mathematics or a subject similarly relevant to the project, must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

The selection is based on how well the applicant is assumed to be able to complete the project tasks. Particular emphasis is placed on the applicant´s knowledge and skills within the subject of his/her proposed specialization, capability to express their work orally and in writing, creativity, ability to take initiatives, independence and ability to work with other researchers.

The evaluation is based on the quality and applicability of previous education and experience, ambitions and research ideas, the personal letter, and potentially interviews.

You must be able to work independently and in groups, as well as towards deadlines. You should be fluent in English. Proven experience in climate modelling is highly desirable.  An interest in big-picture climate questions and paleoclimate is an advantage and experience with CESM would be an additional merit.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as soon as possible or as per agreement.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
