PhD position in electrification of aircraft and airports

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.

Electrification and digitalisation are among the largest areas for the future in the conversion to sustainable societies. The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in the areas – renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 5G communication and wireless sensor networks as well as smart electronic sensors and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international workplace with around 130 employees that all contribute to important technical energy and health challenges at the Ångström Laboratory.

The position will be at the division of electricity, at the Department of Electrical Engineering. We look forward to your application for your future work with us for the future of electric flights and electrified airports.

Project description
In this research project, you as a doctoral student have the opportunity to contribute to research and development for future electrified and sustainable transport system, with a focus on aviation.

In the future, more electrified aircraft are expected to require access to safe charging. Electric aircraft for two passengers are already available today. In the future, electric aircraft are expected to be developed and designed for more passengers. Future electric aircraft can initially go shorter distances than today's traditional aircraft. Electric aircraft can contribute to tourism, business collaborations, goods transport, etc. The design development of electric aircraft is expected to take place together with further development of battery- and hydrogen technology. New electric aircraft open up questions regarding the future role of airports and the possibility of charging several electric aircraft in a fast, safe and efficient way based on flight schedules. Available charging infrastructure is needed locally to charge electric aircraft or drones in the coming years, as well as opening opportunities for development of control strategies, local electricity generation and or battery storage and hydrogen at airports. At the same time, the energy system for the flight and the airport must be reliable and safe even in the event of disruptions or power outages.

This PhD project within the RESILIENT center is about contributing to knowledge on electric aircraft in relation to the charging infrastructure at airports to ensure reliability in the system, and contributing to insights to research, industrial applications and society. The research project (Interregional Perspectives on Infrastructure Investment Optimization for Flight Electrification and Decarbonization, iFED) in which you are part is a collaboration between Mälardalen University and Uppsala University. A case study is given for charging future electric aircraft within the Mälardalen region and southern Sweden, for example at Västerås Airport, and trips to other regions are investigated. Electric aircraft also links to issues of acceptance among travelers and new business models. The project's overarching research question that you, as a PhD student, will analyze is: How can an electric aircraft be charged reliably at the airports and what infrastructure can be relevant for sustainable electrified airports, today and in the future? Your application is very welcome.

We have an exciting work environment designed by the doctoral student and the research team together. The doctoral student will be supervised by at least two supervisors. The Department of Electrical Engineering also gives a salary supplement in addition to the local guidelines for doctoral students at Uppsala University.

Duties

  • Research on electric aircraft and electrified airports with charging infrastructure, based on, for example, literature studies, case studies and modelling.
  • Present the research both orally and in writing, for example in journal articles and at international conferences.
  • Collaborate with researchers at Uppsala University and Mälardalen University within the RESILIENT center and contribute to the iFED project.
  • The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties. No more than 20%.

Requirements

  •  The applicant must hold a master degree in, for example, engineering physics, energy systems, electrical engineering, environmental engineering or a similar field.
  • Knowledge of modeling tools such as Matlab/Simulink or similar.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English; very good knowledge of Swedish is a merit.
  • We will put an emphasise in your personal qualities such as that you show independence, that you are goal- and result oriented, have good cooperation skills and are good at oral communication.

Additional qualifications
Very good oral and written proficiency in Swedish. Interest in or background in, for example, electrified vehicles, charging electric vehicles, electric flights, electrified airports, renewable electricity generation, energy storage or aspects of sustainability.
