LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY

hereby advertises a position as

Senior Lecturer in Information Visualization with Specialization in Visual Analytics of Texts, Networks, and Machine Learning Models

formally based at the Department of Science and Technology (ITN), Division of Media and Information Technology (MIT), Campus Norrköping

Description of the subject area

The advertised position will be affiliated to the Information Visualization research unit (iVis) led by Professor Andreas Kerren (see https://liu.se/en/research/ivis). The research group mainly focuses on the explorative analysis and visualization of typically large and complex information spaces, for example in environmental research, transportation systems, social sciences, or artificial intelligence. Our vision is to attack the big data challenge by a combination of human-centered data analysis and interactive visualization for deriving meaning from the data and final decision making. Our research is highly relevant for academia and economy as both science and industry make increasing use of data-intensive technologies.

We now wish to strengthen and broaden our activies in the visual analysis of texts, networks, and machine learning models (XAI) by recruiting a talented and engaged researcher with technical and educational competences at the borderline between information visualization and machine learning. As those areas usually come with large-scale and dynamic data sets, an integrated approach between visual analytics and complex computational models is necessary that puts high demands on both the frontend (web-based visualization) and the backend (server-based data processing).

The iVis research group is placed at the Division of Media and Information Technology which has an outstanding international reputation in several research areas such as fundamental computer graphics and visualization as well as its applications in the basic science fields of medicine and biology and astronomy. There are also technical applications of our research in areas such as intelligent decision support systems in the transport sector and operator support in the process industry. The MIT division at the Department of Science and Technology works with large-scale visualization in immersive environments, and within the framework of Norrköping Visualization Center C we develop visualizations for dome theaters and public exhibitions.

Duties

The duties assigned to teaching staff may comprise educational responsibilities or research, and administrative tasks. Teachers are also responsible for monitoring developments within their subject areas and developments in the wider community that are significant to their role as a teacher at a higher education institution. The holder of the appointment will participate in teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels.

The work duties include the whole research cycle, i.e., from literature reviews and the identification of research challenges, throughout the implementation of visualization tools and performing user studies, to reporting of results and publication in highly ranked journals and conferences in the areas of information visualization and visual analytics.

The position holder will teach in courses at different levels (incl. course administration and supervision of thesis projects), be involved in syllabi and curricula development, and be responsible teacher for courses. The teaching tasks relate to subjects of the iVis research group, as well as to more general courses offered by the MIT study programs.

The position also involves co-supervision of doctoral students, active participation in the operational work and development of the iVis research group, and attracting external research funding.

Qualifications

To be qualified for this appointment the applicant must have demonstrated teaching proficiency, received a Degree of Doctor or have the equivalent academic expertise or other professional skill which is of significance with consideration for the subject relevant to the appointment and the associated duties.

Here, the definition of “equivalent academic expertise” is a documented foreign degree which is deemed to be at least equivalent to a Degree of Doctor.

The definition of “other professional skill” is relevant professional skill gained outside of higher education. Other professional skill can be considered as a condition of eligibility only for employment in which proven experience within a profession is important.

Grounds for assessment

As grounds for assessment when appointing a senior lecturer, the level of proficiency required to qualify for the appointment shall apply.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching proficiency as to other conditions of eligibility.

For this position special weight is given to scholarly proficiency, followed by teaching proficiency, in turn followed by remaining proficiencies which should be considered equally.

Scholarly proficiency must have been demonstrated through: original research resulting in publication, through planning and managing research and third-cycle courses and study programmes and through the ability to obtain research grants Scholarly proficiency can also be demonstrated through the ability to achieve results in research through collaboration with other teachers and through the ability to provide information about research.

Teaching proficiency is demonstrated through the ability to convey relevant knowledge and skills, to stimulate students such that they drive their own learning process, to create engagement and interest in the subject area, and the ability to structure and organise both the content and forms of work in relation to the goals of the subject area. In addition, the teaching proficiency must have been demonstrated through the ability to contribute to the development and renewal of education and the ability to reflect on their own attitude to education and the results of their work.

Collaboration with society is an integral part of the research and educational mission of the higher education institution, where the ability to use collaboration with society as a means to raise the quality of the education and research, its relevance, dissemination, accessibility and application may constitute grounds for assessment.

Collaboration within research is demonstrated by the ability to disseminate, make accessible and benefit from research through the production and dissemination of popular scientific material, collaborative projects with external non-academic actors, commissioned consulting as expert, mobility projects, commercialisation, and activities undertaken within the framework of permitted secondary employment.

It is required that the doctoral thesis has a major focus on information visualization or visual analytics with an emphasis on at least one of the mentioned specialization areas (visual analytics of texts, networks, or machine learning models).

In addition to the general assessment grounds described before with respect to the research and teaching experiences in information visualization and visual analytics, experience with visualization- and data science-related programming languages and libraries (e.g., Java, JavaScript, WebGL/OpenGL, Python, or Scikit-Learn) is also substantial for this position, as well as a solid training in mathematics and computer graphics. The candidate should even have skills for the development and maintenance of web-based visualization tools, such as D3, MongoDB, WebSockets, and Unix-based server architectures.

Further assessment criteria are documented expertise within at least three of the following research/educational topics: (1) visual text analytics and text visualization, (2) visualization of multivariate (and/or dynamic) networks, (3) multidimensional visualization techniques in combination with machine learning and/or data mining techniques, (4) integration of visual analytics approaches with computational models incl. XAI, and (5) experiences in visualization applied to specific application domains (such as digital humanities, information science, social sciences, etc.).

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required, preferably documented in the form of papers published in well-known journals and/or presented in well-known conferences in the area of Information Visualization and/or Visual Analytics. Teamwork experiences, such as previous work in national/international research projects, and interdisciplinary collaborations should be documented in the application. Active involvement in writing grant applications is also considered as meriting, as well as experience in supervising first- and second-cycle thesis projects and doctoral students, preferably supported by a finished pedagogical training with regard to teaching in higher education institutions and doctoral supervision.

It is desirable that the successful candidate with another mother tongue than Swedish should be able to teach in Swedish within two years from being appointed.
