Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Political Science, with a focus on Drivers and Outcomes of Resilience During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Malawi

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Political Science is an open and socially engaged institution, in the middle of a vibrant city. In 2022, the ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities placed the department number 1 in Sweden, 5 in Europe, and 19 in the world in political science. We are very research-active and offer a lively research environment with several thematic seminar series and internal workshops. The Department’s research revolves around elections, democracy, governance, corruption, development, forms of government, globalization, the environment and politics, as well as European issues. The department hosts research programs such as the Center for Collective Action Research (CeCAR), the QoG Institute, Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), Governance and Local Development Institute (GLD) and the Swedish Electoral Research Program. We have education at all levels, undergraduate advanced level and postgraduate level, as well as independent courses. Teaching is given in both Swedish and English. In total, about 1,400 people study with us. The Department of Political Science has around 160 employees.

The Governance and Local Development Institute (GLD) is directed by Professor Ellen Lust. GLD aims to explain variation in governance and local development in an effort to promote human welfare globally. GLD has a robust research infrastructure, with administrative, data, and research teams working together with scholars across the world to implement scientifically rigorous, policy relevant research. Read more about the research program on our website at http://www.gld.gu.se/

The project, Survive, Thrive, or Deprive? Drivers and Outcomes of Resilience During the Covid-19 Pandemic in Malawi, examines why some individuals and communities respond better than others to crises, and the longer-term effects of crises on governance and welfare. Examining community governance in Malawi during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, it aims to answer three questions: 1) What explains when and how communities implement and enforce policies to mitigate the pandemic's negative effects? When/why does this impact poverty and inequality? 2) How do community factors and individuals' characteristics affect how individuals manage crises? and 3) How has the pandemic altered community social ties and authority?

During the project we will implement face-to-face (F2F) household and elite surveys as well as conduct case studies and focus groups. The newly collected data will be combined with F2F surveys with households and elites conducted in 2019 before the pandemic and three telephone surveys conducted during the pandemic. Together, this data will allow us to yield theoretical understandings of resilience, health crisis response, and authority while supporting policymakers and development specialists to alleviate poverty and other negative consequences of crises.

The Department of Political Science and the Governance and Local Development Institute are looking for a postdoc to work with the Survive, Thrive, or Deprive? Drivers and Outcomes of Resilience During the Covid-19 Pandemic in Malawi project and related research. Employment will be full time for two years, residential in Gothenburg, with a flexible start date in Summer/Fall 2023.

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 45 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Description of the workplace
The Cardiac Inflammation Research Group at Lund University studies immune and inflammatory mechanisms involved in cardiovascular disease. By using animal models, in-vitro studies and large patient cohorts we develop new treatments and biomarkers for translation into clinical practice. We are particularly interested in experimental and clinical studies of myocardial infarction, myocarditis and sepsis. We are promoting a broad cooperation between our group members and other groups in the same research environment. We are supporting the younger members of our team in their efforts to establish themselves as independent researchers. You can read more about our research on our website.

We offer
Lund University is a government agency, which means that you receive special benefits, generous holidays and a favorable occupational pension. Read more on the university's website about being employed at Lund University.

Work duties and responsibilities
We are looking for a motivated Postdoctoral research fellow for a unique project aiming to develop an immunomodulatory treatment against cardiac inflammation, by targeting the pro-inflammatory alarmin S100A8/A9. More information about the treatment can be found in our recent publications in the European Heart Journal (Marinkovic et al, 2019) and Circulation Research (Marinkovic et al, 2020). The treatment has recently been highlighted in Nature Reviews in Immunology as one of the most promising up-and-coming anti-inflammatory therapies in myocardial infarction. In-vivo and in-vitro experiments will be performed to define the underlying immunopathological mechanisms and to develop a possible therapy for patients. The position offers a great opportunity to be involved in a project with high potential for future clinical applicability.

You will work in direct collaboration with Dr. Alexandru Schiopu, the principal investigator leading the project, and with the other members of the group. You are expected to independently design and perform experiments, supervise junior members, run statistical analyses, interpret the data and present the results in publications and at international meetings.

The project includes work with:

  • Mouse models of myocardial infarction, myocarditis and sepsis
  • Cell culture – immune cells, cardiomyocytes, fibroblasts, endothelial cells
  • Analysis of cell function, gene expression, signaling pathways, NLRP3 inflammasome activation
  • Single-cell CITEseq and RNAseq analyses
  • Analyses of mitochondrial function and cell metabolism
  • Epigenetic analyses
  • Flow cytometry
  • Histology

Other assignments may also occur.

Eligibility
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. Postdoctoral fellow in Economic History

The department of economic history is hiring a Postdoctoral Fellow in the research program ‘The legacy of a settler colony: Quantitative panel studies of the political economy of the Cape Colony’. The program is funded by the The Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation and will run to the end of 2026. It currently employs 13 researchers based in Sweden, South Africa, The Netherlands, and USA and 5 research assistants based in South Africa.

Associate professor Erik Green leads the program. The main objective of the research project is to to contribute to the large literature on colonialism and global inequality by – for the first time – using big data and machine learning techniques to analyze the roots and gradual development of a settler economy - the Cape Colony - its institutions and their impact on growth, inequality, and welfare over time and space. To capture these gradual processes the program is constructing the most comprehensive panel database for the global south – The Cape of Good Hope Panel database. The database provides us with economic and demographic micro-level panel data for almost the entire settler population in the Cape Colony for almost 200 years (c. 1660-1840).

The Postdoctoral fellow will work closely with a supervision team. S/he is expected to create data linkage strategies and link the various sources in the Cape of Good Hope Panel Project. S/he is also expected to produce research papers broadly related to themes such as economic development, living standards, and inequality.

The Fellow must be willing to interact with students at the Department of Economic History and to participate actively in the common activities of the Department. The position involves a limited amount of teaching and/or supervision of Bachelor and Master's Theses.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

To be qualified for employment as Postdoctoral Fellow, an individual must hold a PhD in Economic History or related discipline (e.g. Economics, Sociology, Economic Geography, Statistics, History) awarded no more than three years ago (unless the applicant has been on parental leave or leave due to illness). Applications will also be accepted from persons who have not yet completed their PhD, but this condition must be satisfied at the time of employment.

Basis of Assessment

Scholarly proficiency is one of the requirements for employment. The candidate must have demonstrated a high degree of research expertise as manifested in the quality of the PhD dissertation and/or publications. Documented experience of working with large historical databases and linking strategies is required, as well as documented experience with scripting languages such as R or Python.

The evaluation will take personal qualities, such as willingness to collaborate, academic independence, and communication skills, into consideration.

Applications should be written in English and must include:

  1. Cover letter
  2. Curriculum Vitae
  3. Publication list Certificates
  4. References, etc

Lund University promotes an equal opportunities code. We encourage both men and women to apply for this position.
