Overview

The Food Processing and Nutrition Research Group is focused on using nanotechnology for developing applications to contribute to figure out a new food system sustainable, healthier, and digital. The solutions proposed are focused in two main topics food packaging and food personalization.

 

We are looking for a qualified Junior Fellow to join our team to work in a food laboratory, designing and  performing experiments and write technical reports under the project hOLIVEcream – Healthy olive oil based creams enriched with berries for application in bakery and pastry with reference number 46947. This project is co-funded by N2020 – North Portugal Regional Operational Programme, under the Portugal 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

 

 

Job Duties

     The job duties will be the following:

1.     Design and perform laboratory work

2.     Write technical reports

3.     Organize and be involved in meetings with the company

4.     Write scientific documents and be involved in the dissemination of the results

 

Mandatory Qualifications

 

Education

  • Master degree in food science and technology, chemical and biological engineering, biochemistry, bioengineering, or other related fields.

 

Experience

  • Experience in using soft materials for the development of low fat food products;
  • Strong experience on food formulation based on bio-based and edible materials, oleogels development, hydrogels and bigels, encapsulation of biomolecules:
  • Experience in the development of food products in pilot plant.

 

Technical Skills

  • Experience on physical and chemical characterization techniques (XRD, SAXS, rheology, texturometer, tribology, FTIR, Raman);
  • Data analysis, statistical studies and modelling.

 

Other Skills

  • Experience on using healthy and clean label ingredients for the development of food products.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • International research track record in the field of food science and technology;
  • A good track record of disseminating research results.
  • International mobility experience.

 

 

Personal Skills

  • “Hands-on” approach together with a high commitment in respecting working deadlines;
  • Problem Solving ability;
  • Customer orientation;
  • Ability to work independently and as team player;

Overview

The 2D Materials and Devices Group is dedicated to produce and engineer 2D materials for advanced technology. We are looking for a qualified and motivated Junior Fellow in the area of 2D materials and technology to join our team in developing graphene and related materials by solution processing and other scalable techniques. The GEMIS – Graphene-enhanced Electro-Magnetic Interference Shielding,” project with the reference POCI-01-0247-FEDER-045939 is co-funded by COMPETE 2020 – Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalization and FCT – Science and Technology Foundation, under the Portugal 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

 

The project aims at developing versatile technological solutions based on graphene and 2D materials (and composites), focusing at several applications (such as electromagnetic interference shielding) and will run in cooperation with Graphenest – a Portuguese graphene-producing company with strong R&D capabilities – and the University of Minho. The project will be also supported by the University of Texas at Austin.

 

The current position profile requires a Junior Fellow to develop and optimize graphene- and 2D materials-based technologies. The selected candidate will be working with an international INL team under the supervision of Dr Andrea Capasso.

 

 

          Job Duties

The Job duties will be the following:

 

  1. Develop graphene and 2D materials by liquid phase exfoliation, chemical vapor deposition, and other techniques;
  2. Characterize/optimize the materials to comply with the specific requirements of the targeted applications;
  3. Fabricate and test devices in the fields of flexible electronics, electromagnetic compatibility, sensing, among the others;
  4. Participate to other innovative research activities related to 2D materials production and application;
  5. Analyze current literature and contribute to writing reports and publications.

 

The candidate will have access to INL’s state of the art facilities for the materials preparation, nano-structuring, characterization and test. A wide range of equipment for the production, deposition (such as inkjet and screen printers, spray coaters, etc.) and testing of 2D materials and devices are available.

 

Note: The contract of employment may be renewed based on the performance of the individual and the duration of the project.

 

Mandatory Qualifications

 

Education

  • MSc Degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Electronic Engineering, or any other relevant field;

 

Experience

  • Experience in nanomaterials;
  • Experience in writing and reporting (in English);

 

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in nanotechnology, in terms of general knowledge and specific skills related to materials characterization.

 

Other Skills

  • Good English (written and spoken) and communication skills are required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the area of graphene and 2D materials;
  • Previous international experience in related fields is considered a plus.

 

Personal Skills

  • Strong motivation to work as part of a team in an interdisciplinary environment;
