The Electric Drives Group has two open postdoctoral research positions funded by the Academy of Finland's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in High-Speed Electromechanical Energy Conversion Systems (2022–2029).

 

Your role

You will conduct ground-breaking research on next-generation high-speed electric machine drives. Depending on your interest and background, we can offer you a research topic ranging from the design and optimization of an overall drive system to the development of control methods. You will also develop models and tools needed by our CoE partners. You will be provided possibilities to teach in master-level courses and to instruct doctoral students.

 

Your background and expertise

We expect you to have a recent doctoral degree in electrical engineering, control engineering or a related field. The successful candidate will have demonstrated proficiency in the following areas:

 

  • electric machine drives, power converters (both theoretical and hands-on experience)

  • control engineering (experience with nonlinear systems is appreciated)

  • programming skills (ability to code in Python and C++ is appreciated)

  • strong command of written and spoken English.

Scientific environment

The Electric Drives Group conducts research on electric machine drives and power converters, including their modelling, analysis, control design, and optimization. Our core competence is the development of advanced real-time algorithms for control, estimation, and identification. We actively collaborate with the industry. Our results have led to several granted patents. Many algorithms and methods developed by the group have been implemented in commercial drive and converter products.

 

The Electric Drives Group belongs to the CoE in High-Speed Electromechanical Energy Conversion Systems. The world is being electrified at unparalleled pace, from transport to industrial processes and complete energy systems. As a result, there is an incomparable need for energy-, material-, and cost-efficient electric machine drives and powertrains. The CoE brings together the key experts in this area.

 

We offer

The expected starting salary for a Postdoctoral Researcher is approximately 3700 €/month and salary will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. The fixed term contract is initially for two years. The annual workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is currently 1612 hours. You will also develop models and tools needed by our CoE partners and in cooperation with them. You will be provided possibilities to teach in master-level courses and to instruct master’s doctoral students.

We expect you to have a recent doctoral degree in electrical engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field. The successful candidate will have demonstrated proficiency in the following areas:

  • programming skills (ability to code in Fortran and Matlab are appreciated)

The Computational Electromechanics Group conducts research on electric machines and the related numerical simulation of the electromagnetic field for model order reduction, optimization, and fault diagnosis. The Department of Applied Physics is now looking for a

Postdoctoral Researcher in AI for Atmospheric Science

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Computational Electronic Structure Theory (CEST) group. In this position, you will have a chance to make an impact on atmospheric science by applying tools from artificial intelligence (AI). Our long-term objective is to build a virtual laboratory for atmospheric science research. For the virtual laboratory, we will develop digital twins of scientific instruments and chemical processes and AI assistants to facilitate the understanding of molecular aggregation processes in the atmosphere.

Your role and goals

You will develop and implement machine learning approaches to manage the combinatorial complexity of molecular chemistry and molecular clustering behavior. The project is part of the recently founded Center of Excellence in Atmospheric Science VILMA and you will collaborate with experimentalists, theoreticians and computer scientists. You will manage data flow from different data sources (e.g., computational chemistry simulations, scientific instruments) alongside data analytics tools and running AI algorithms in high-performance computing environments.

Your experience and ambitions

We welcome candidates with a PhD in computational physics or chemistry or computer science who are curious about applied machine learning in the natural sciences. Prior machine learning experience is required for this position. We seek colleagues who enjoy coding, scripting and analytics, and are keen to push the boundaries of machine learning and AI. This project requires creative thinking and programming, as well as technical expertise in machine learning and a broad understanding of computational science and molecular chemistry. We further appreciate willingness to travel, teach and mentor, collaborate and communicate science.

The Molecular Nanoengineering group operates at the interface of nanoscience, DNA nanotechnology, molecular self-assembly and nanophotonics with particular focus on DNA-based self-assembled systems with functionalities tailored for biosensing, active plasmonics and nanomachinery. Position summary

The position is located at the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus. The position will be initially filled for one year, with a possibility of extension up to three years. The starting salary is approximately 3800€/month (gross). The contract includes Aalto University occupational healthcare.

Major responsibilities

Your research will be focused on development of novel synthesis methods that enable transferring of high spatial accuracy of DNA origami technique into inorganic nanostructures of complex morphologies. Furthermore, postdoctoral researchers are expected to propose his/her own research ideas and to be an active member of the group/department by taking part in project management duties, guiding BSc, MSc and doctoral students. Teaching responsibilities will be decided according to the candidate’s interests and experience.

Qualifications

We are looking for outstanding candidates with a strong background and proven research track record in colloidal and inorganic nanomaterial synthesis, especially metal and silica nanoparticles. Previous experience in nanomicroscopy (AFM, TEM, SEM), DNA nanotechnology and plasmonics is an advantage. The candidate should hold a PhD degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science or equivalent. Furthermore, you should have good communication skills, good analytical and experimental skills, and good ability to work independently toward the goals of your project. The position requires excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.

General information

The Aalto School of Arts, Design and Architecture offers a Visiting Researcher in ARTS positions for postdoctoral Researchers and Doctoral Candidates. Please note that master level students are not accepted. The position is UNFUNDED and open to Researchers from all countries.Visiting Reseracher should have preferably secured funding for the duration of the visit before applying for this position. Visiting Researcher in ARTS is for a full semester position or a full academic year. The applicant may indicate a particular time period of the visit and the starting date of the visit.

The Visiting Researcher in ARTS will be provided working space, IT services, access to the library services, opportunity to participate in the Department’s and School of Arts, Design and Architecture's events, and interact with staff and other Researchers within the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Additionally s/he will be part of a larger research community of Aalto University. The school will help to arrange housing for the Visiting Researcher in ARTS.

Visiting Researcher in ARTS is expected to undertake research and publication in collaboration with Department's personnel and independent research. S/he is expected to prepare a lecture about the research topic within two weeks of arrival and may be asked to contribute to the teaching of the Department. Visiting Researcher is also expected to participate in departmental meetings. The Visiting Researcher will have to sign an Academic Visitor contract with the School of Arts, Design and Architecture immediately after arrival in Finland.
