PhD fellowship in Planet Formation at the GLOBE Institute

We are offering a PhD fellowship in Planet Formation commencing 1 September 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Our group and research

The research group of Michiel Lambrechts focuses on understanding the origin of our Solar System and the formation of exoplanetary systems. Using numerical simulations, we explore the evolution of protoplanetary discs and their dust component, planetesimal formation, the growth of the protoplanets through pebble accretion, and the attraction of early gaseous envelopes around planetary cores.

The group is part of the StarPlan section at the GLOBE Institute of the University of Copenhagen (https://globe.ku.dk/research/starplan/). The broader StarPlan environment at the University of Copenhagen includes also researchers at the Niels Bohr Institute. StarPlan focuses on understanding the formation of planets by studying meteorites (Martin Bizzarro, Jim Connelly, Martin Schiller, Elishevah van Kooten, Zhengbin Deng), by developing planet formation theory and simulations (Anders Johansen, Michiel Lambrechts), by star formation theory and simulations (Troels Haugbølle, Åke Nordlund), by observations of star formation and protoplanetary discs (Jes Jørgensen), by studying the origin and evolution of dust (Anja Andersen) and by studying exoplanets and their atmospheres (Uffe Graae Jørgensen). We are physically located at the Natural History Museum of Denmark in the center of Copenhagen.

Project description

With the new EXODOSS project (funded by an ERC starting grant, PI: Michiel Lambrechts), we aim to revisit how Earth-like planets form, around our sun and other stars. This topic will be explored in the context of our modern understanding of (1) disc-wind-driven protoplanetary disc evolution (2) the role of pebble accretion and planetary migration on embryos in N-body simulations and (3) the effect of young embedded envelopes on the growth and composition of protoplanets.

The prospective candidate will concentrate especially on the strong link between protoplanetary disc evolution and planet formation. The goal will be to incorporate state-of-the-art and observationally-supported theoretical models of protoplanetary disc evolution in planet formation models. This will require developing numerical models, as well as making use, and building on, state-of-the-art hydrodynamic and N-body simulation programs.

PhD scholarships in Public Administration and Public Policy at the Department of Political Science

The Department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a number of Ph.D. scholarships in Public Administration and Public Policy. The Department welcomes qualified applications in all aspects of public policy, public administration and organization. At the present time, however, there is a particular interest in enhancing research in the following thematic areas:

  • Diversity and discrimination

Increasing ethnic and religious diversity in mature welfare states raises important questions about both bias and discrimination in citizen-state interactions and diversity issues in the composition of street- and upper-level bureaucrats. The public sector is also faced with gender imbalances as the majority of public sector worker are female while the top leadership is dominated by men. This raises a set of questions and we welcome applications aimed at analyzing them: How can discrimination be countered in a public sector context and what are the barriers to better female and ethnic minority representation at all levels of the public sector? How does diversity influence recruitment, leadership and performance?

  • Digitalization and machine learning.

Digitalizing administrative procedures holds a potential for increasing efficiency, but also raises critical issues such as how technology influence inequity and effectiveness as well as helping behavior and innovation. Furthermore, present developments, where administrative professionals and citizens gets detached in time and space is in stark contrast to the importance given to face-to face relations in organizational research. However, particular types of digital communication have the advantage of being very accessible, and availability is crucial for helping behavior – the help needs to be within reach. Thus, there is a strong need to develop knowledge on how helping behavior can be mediated with digital communication, and we welcome applications that may contribute to such knowledge.

  • Behavioral Public Administration

Public policies are rarely self-executing. Across policy areas, the delivery and performance of the public services are a product of what the public employees think and do. Knowledge is needed on how psychological forces and mechanisms shape the attitudes and behaviors of citizens, public employees, and public managers. How do heuristics and cognitive biases affect discretion and decision-making in state-citizen interactions? What can we do to minimize the occurrence of illegitimate biases and disparity in public services provision? We welcome applications that draw on psychological theories and experimental methods to investigate these critical questions by relating to decision-making in administrative settings and to broader societal issues concerning effectiveness, efficiency, and social equity in public administration.

Beyond the above ideas we welcome PhD project aimed at other core questions and themes as broadly found in the field of Public Policy and Administration.

The project themes

The PhD fellowship is based on a close collaboration with the Capital Region of Denmark (CRD), the regional authority of the Copenhagen Region, which is responsible for managing Denmark’s largest hospital organization, including 11 hospitals and 36.000 employees. The overall objective of the fellowship is to conduct research in innovation processes and innovation management and contribute new knowledge that can support the future development of the CRD’s innovation practices. The PhD fellowship is expected to focus one of the following three research project themes:

Project proposal 1: This project aims to enrich our understanding of employee-driven innovation and investigates how best to promote and support entrepreneurship and innovation in health care systems. The project asks questions such as: What characterizes and drives employees who engage in innovation? How do they transform their ideas into value creating solutions? How, and under what conditions do employee innovators interact with the formal hospital innovation support systems and the broader ecosystem?

Project proposal 2: The project aims to enrich our understanding of how innovation and entrepreneurship in the health care and hospital sector can be supported by tools, heuristics and frameworks. The project will scrutinize existing and support the development of new innovation support tools. The project asks: Which types of processes and tools optimize innovation processes and long-term value creation. How are such processes best implemented within health care systems?

Project proposal 3: The project aims to enrich our understanding of the practices, structures and dynamics of the wider health innovation ecosystem with a focus on development of more coherent health pathways. The project asks: What characterizes the types and dynamics of processes within health sector innovation ecosystems? Who are the involved actors, and what are their relationships? What hinders or promotes inter-organizational innovation processes?

Which of these themes the PhD student presumes will depend on prior academic experiences, and personal interest and competencies.

Who are we looking for?

The Department of Chemistry invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in aluminium promoted regioselective deprotection of cyclodextrins. The project is is part of a research program directed at creating artificial enzymes and is financed by the Novo Nordisk foundation.

Start date is 1 August 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project
Cyclodextrins are inexpensive starch-derived molecules that can bind small lipophilic molecules. This gives cyclodextrins many areas of application in food and perfume industry, drug-livery and research. Being able to modify cyclodextrins selectively enhances their use and applications further because it can change their physical properties including which molecules they bind. However chemical modification of cyclodextrins is difficult due to their complex structure. A useful method of cyclodextrin modification is diisobutyl-aluminiumhydrid (DIBAL) promoted deprotection of perbenzylated cyclodextrins, which gives access to selective modifications on the primary side of the cyclodextrin – however no similarly efficient modification of the secondary side exist. The topic of this Phd project is find ways to modify both rims of the cyclodextrin selectively. Taking off in exiting discoveries in our lab the Phd student must carry out systematic investigated aimed at understanding and taming a complex reaction.
