Postdoc in Machine Learning Techniques for Communication over the Fiber-Optic Channel

 


Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral research position funded by the Villum Foundation Synergy: ‘Machine learning-enabled fiber-optic communication (MARBLE). The objective of the MARBLE project is to develop novel machine learning based strategies for communication over the nonlinear optical fiber channel. The start date is flexible. 

The project is interdisciplinary and will cover topics within the field of machine learning and optical communication. The project will be carried out in Machine Learning in Photonic Systems (M-LiPS), group. The group has a strong track record and industry collaboration in the application of machine learning techniques to optical communication systems and photonic systems in general.


The project will explore the latest advances within machine learning to enable nonlinear-distortion free communication over the optical fibre channel. It will be explored how to combine machine techniques with optical communication, to enable spectrally efficient and robust  optical communication systems covering ultra-wide band transmission (O+E+S+C+L band). More specifically, the application and efficient training for auto-encoders will be investigated.  The project will cover both algorithm development as well as experimental implementations.   

Responsibilities and qualifications
The candidate will be focusing on improving communication strategies over the nonlinear fiber optic channel using machine learning. Moreover, the candidate will participate in implementing the developed techniques in experimental test-bed and performing transmission experiemnts. 


This position will investigate the research topics below using both theoretical and experimental methods:

  • Gradient-free training of neural networks
  • Development of novel machine learning based transmitter and receiver schemes for ultra-wideband optical communication systems
  • Investigation of the impact of the components non-idealities on the devised machine learning based communication strategies
  • On-line training of transmitter and receiver architectures

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree in telecommunication, machine learning, photonics engineering or equivalent.

Moreover, the candidate shall have experience with one or more of the following skills:

  • Optical or digital communication systems
  • Machine learning techniques such as: neural networks, Bayesian filtering, reinforcement learning, evolutionary algorithms, numerical optimization
  • Experimental realization of high-speed optical communication systems employing advanced modulation formats and coherent detection
  • Python/PyTorch/TensorFlow/MATLAB
  • Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken
  • Innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas
  • Experience in student supervision at B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels

DTU invites applications for an assistant/associate professorship in Design and Innovation within the Responsible Innovation and Design division at DTU Management. Qualifications
You must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) within Design Research, Science and Technology Studies, Co-design, Innovation Studies or similar. If you are applying for the associate professor position, you should also have academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an assistant professorship and documented didactic/pedagogic training. You should have experience with research and teaching relevant to the issue of innovation and design.

PhD Scholarship in Trait-based Modelling of Life in the Global Ocean

 


Centre for Ocean Life (www.OceanLifeCentre.dk) offers 3-year PhD fellowship(s) in trait-based modelling of life in the global ocean. The fellow(s) will be employed at DTU Aqua (The National Institute for Aquatic Resources, Technical University of Denmark).

We expect the PhD candidates to develop, implement and analyse models of microbial life (plankton) and sinking particles based on the “Nutrient-Unicellular-Multicellular” model framework. The overall aim is to scale from traits of individual organisms to the function of the ecosystem on a global scale.

We currently have a group of about 20 young scientists associated the Centre (PhD and Postdocs). They are working on various aspects of marine life using diverse approaches (observational, experimental, theoretical) while collaborating through weekly science meetings, annual science retreats, numerous working groups, and collaborative projects. Their backgrounds are as diverse as are those of the PIs of the Centre, from physics and mathematics to biology and chemistry, and we spend considerable effort developing cross-disciplinary communication and projects since we believe that the potential for discovery and progress may be achieved by confronting the different disciplines.

Postdoc in Atmosphere-Wave-Ocean Modeling for Offshore Wind Energy

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall role is to advance the department’s competences in research and application in numerical modeling of atmosphere, wave and ocean for offshore wind energy application and development, for both bottom-fixed and floating wind turbines and wind farms.

You will work with colleagues in the Resource Assessment and Meteorology section as well as other Sections and Divisions in our multidisciplinary  Department.

Your primary research activities  will be to:

  • Further develop the department’s wind-wave-ocean coupled modeling system, with consideration of normal as well as storm conditions
  • Investigate coupling various wave models to DTU’s modeling system, which already includes WRF and SWAN
  • Investigate the effect of source and dissipation functions in the wave modeling on a wide range of met-ocean conditions
  • Pave the way  from science to application for floating and bottom-fixed offshore wind farms
  • Collaboration with other sections on relevant topics e.g. satellite data, system optimization and load calculation.

We expect from you that

  • You have experiences with wave modeling and preferably have coding experiences
  • You have skills in geophysical numerical modeling
  • You are familiar with Linux and high performance computing
  • You have a background in oceanography, meteorology or related disciplines
