Research Engineer

at the Department of Environmental Science. Closing date: 15 November 2022.

The Department of Environmental Science (ACES) at Stockholm University is one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Science. The department is divided into four units with more than 190 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. The department has a strong focus on research, spanning from couplings between climate change and biogeochemical cycles (atmosphere-land-ocean) to the sources, transport and effects of environmental contaminants. At the Unit for Biogeochemistry we are studying many aspects of the composition and functioning of the Earth system and large-scale biogeochemical cycles, and how these are affected by and feed back on anthropogenic perturbations such as climate warming. Two of our prioritized research areas are (i) how thawing land and subsea permafrost systems in the Arctic affects large-scale carbon cycling, including triggering release of various greenhouse gases, and (ii) how air pollution particularly in South Asia affects the gas and aerosol composition of the atmosphere, and how it affects the climate.

We analyse specific molecules (i.e., gases and molecular markers), major and minor elements. We develop and apply isotope techniques: various isotope ratios and compound-specific isotope fingerprints of gases, aerosol components, and organic matter fractions in matrices such as air, seawater, sediments and soil, along with many other geochemical and geophysical system parameters.

The Unit for Biogeochemistry is now recruiting a Research Engineer to join our team of research engineers, faculty. post-docs and PhD students, to function as support to ongoing externally-funded research activities, become our lead manager for field observations and contribute to our molecular-isotope analytical competence.

Main responsibilities
The new colleague will be part of a team of several research engineers that works tightly with research group leaders, post-docs and PhD students. We do not expect anyone to cover all tasks listed below. Specific tasks and responsibilities will be divided within the tech group and the research group, and will depend on the particular skills and match of the incoming new colleague. This position is likely to include a combination of these key tasks:

Installation, operation and maintenance of both permanent facility/infrastructure and instruments used both continuously at remote atmospheric observatories and for specific field campaigns in both our atmospheric and Arctic research tracks. Instruments include those used for gases (e.g., Picarro cavity ring-down laser spectroscopy, Horiba CO monitors and gas chromatography) and for aerosol chemistry and physics (e.g., aethalometers, nephelometers, DMPS and Digitel high-volume filtration systems). This also includes programming of dataloggers, instrument calibration, efficient data management and quality assurance. The incoming candidate is likely to also contribute to university laboratory preconcentration systems, GCirMS and other instruments.

Management of the logistics in day-to-day operations, preparations for and execution of field campaigns. This includes shipping and receiving, securing permits, keeping close contact with local observatory colleagues. Coordinate and participate in field campaigns at our atmospheric observatories and at sea; analyse samples in our university laboratories.

Introduce and mentor Master students, PhD students, postdocs and guest researchers to laboratory protocols and field operations, including our safety routines. Master and document our methods for measurement, data processing and database management to ensure continuity, and to serve as a knowledge-bridge to new team members. Contribute to development of methods and research projects.

Participate actively in development and maintenance of a sound work environment.

Qualification requirements
M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree with focus on chemical-instrumental analysis, field instrumentation or corresponding competence.

Experience of a combination of high-precision measurements of atmospheric gases using laser (isotope) spectroscopy (e.g. Picarro instruments), online aerosol instrumentation, and/or GCirMS (e.g., Thermo Fisher Delta V) as well as maintenance and troubleshooting of state-of-the-art analytical instruments.

Knowledge of data handling and solid coding skills (e.g. in Python, R and/or MatLab).

Experience with field sampling/campaigns. Hands-on basic mechanical and electrical engineering skills are beneficial.

Good organizational skills and high social competence. Fluency in English (in speaking and in writing) is a requirement; basic knowledge of Swedish is an advantage (can be developed in an early phase of the employment).

Subject

Legal Theory or International law with particular reference to Quantum Computing

Subject description

The Faculty of Law is advertising one post-doctoral position within the research project QSHIFT: Decision-making in the age of Quantum Computing. QSHIFT is an interdisciplinary research group located in Berlin (Neuroscience, Charité), Copenhagen (Law), St. Gallen (Media & Communication) and Lund (Law). The aim of QSHIFT is to explore the cultural, social and legal significance of quantum computing for human decision-making. The activities of QSHIFT at Lund are coordinated by Dr. Valentin Jeutner. The three-year project is funded by FORTE / CHANSE.

The Lund team explores the legal significance of quantum computing within the context of human decision-making. The overarching question is whether the availability of information and technological expertise impacts a human’s ability to make independent decisions in a legally relevant manner. Specific questions in the context of quantum technology include but are not limited to, for instance, whether human decision-makers at times of crisis (e.g. war, pandemic, natural disasters) have a duty to defer to recommendations generated by quantum models; whether the emergence of highly sophisticated technologies like quantum computing undermines the decision-making autonomy of ordinary individuals; whether existing legal standards for decision-making are also applicable to quantum technology; whether the legal analysis concerning the way in which general AI impairs/enhances a human decision-maker’s decision-making process can be applied to quantum technologies.

Duties

The post-doctoral researcher is expected to dedicate 80% of their time to research. Work duties also include teaching for up to a maximum of 20 %.

The post-doctoral researcher is expected to conduct independent research in the broadly construed areas of legal theory or international law with particular reference to quantum computing. In light of the overarching theme of QSHIFT, project proposals concerning the links between human decision-making processes and emerging technologies from the perspective of legal theory and/or international law are of particular interest.

The post-doctoral researcher is expected to assist with the coordination of the project’s research activities at Lund and to interact with the project’s three partners in Switzerland, Denmark and Germany.

Qualifications

A person shall be qualified for appointment as a postdoctoral fellow who has been awarded a doctor’s degree in legal science or a degree deemed equivalent to a doctor’s degree in legal science. Evidence substantiating that these qualifications requirements have been met must have been received at the latest three working days after application deadline´s expiration. An applicant who has completed a doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline´s expiration is primarily eligible. Where special grounds exists, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Special grounds include leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, positions as elected representative in trade union organisations, mandatory service in connection with total defence preparations, or comparable circumstances, and practical training or other services/tasks of relevance for the advertised position.

For a post doctor at Lund University, the general qualification requirements concern being suitable for and having the ability in general that is needed to satisfactorily carry out the duties of the appointment in question.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for the advertised position are a good ability to develop and carry out high-quality research in the broadly construed fields of legal theory or international law with particular reference to quantum computing. The primary focus of the assessment shall be on research expertise.

Particular emphasis will be placed on a candidate’s previous engagement with legal questions concerning human decision-making processes.

Particular emphasis will be placed on the submitted plan of the research project.

The Faculty’s research environment and PhD-education are markedly international and, alongside the professional law degree, the Faculty offers several international Master’s programmes.

Lund University and the Faculty of Law offer an inclusive work environment that fosters development within the broader dynamic research and innovation area of the Öresund region.

Subject

Private law, specialising in property law

Subject description

Private law consists of legal norms that regulate relations between private legal entities and those legal relations between public and private legal entities that are based on voluntary legal acts.

Property law is a central part of private law. Property law includes, for example, contract, tort, insurance, property and consumer law. The subject is primarily confined to the law in force in Sweden, whether of national, Nordic, European or wider international origin.

No legislation exists on certain private law matters, such as building and construction contracting. Instead, general principles of law are applied based on case law and analogous application of rules from related areas of law. The subject is broadly limited to the law in force in Sweden, whether of national, Nordic, European or broader international origin.

Work duties

The post as associate senior lecturer is a career development position and is to offer opportunities for gaining research and teaching qualifications within the subject area of private law. The position shall to an essential part provide scope for developing research qualifications, and the primary duty is to conduct high quality research. The research must result in national and international publications, and the associate senior lecturer must also actively apply for external funding.

Additional duties include teaching in the faculty’s undergraduate, Master’s and PhD programmes, as well as in distance learning and contract education. The successful candidate will have special responsibility for research and teaching within the subject area of property law, especially Swedish property law.

Furthermore, he or she is to maintain and further develop a stimulating research and study environment through teaching, supervision and collaboration with teaching staff, researchers, doctoral students, students and external contacts, and to contribute to the faculty’s other activities.

The researchers and teachers at the Faculty are expected to contribute to a dynamic research environment as well as to other Faculty activities, and to perform work primarily in the workplace provided by the Faculty.

The tasks also include participating in an interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers from other faculties within LU (LTH, IIIEE and EHL) in the scope of a project on sustainability and circularity in the construction industry.

The background to this thematic project initiated by LU is as follows. The construction industry's climate impact, resource consumption and waste generation currently account for 25-35% of Europe's waste. Resource efficiency in the sector is low and the raw materials used are only recovered to a limited extent. Opportunities to limit the consumption of natural resources through re-use, which conserves both resources and embodied energy, are poorly exploited. There is significant potential if recycling can be increased and greater circularity can be achieved.

The scope of the position shall also provide an opportunity for training in teaching and learning in higher education corresponding to at least five weeks.

Qualifications

A person qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer is a person who has been awarded a PhD in legal science or has the corresponding research expertise. Primary consideration should be given to a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise within five years of the deadline for application for employment as an associate senior lecturer. However, a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

For an associate senior lecturer, the general qualification requirements include being suitable for and having the ability in general that is needed to satisfactorily carry out the duties of the appointment in question.

Assessment criteria

For appointments to associate senior lecturer, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and carry out high quality research, and teaching skills. For appointments to associate senior lecturer, both research and teaching skills are considered in the assessment. The focus of the assessment shall be on research skills.
