PhD position on correlated ultrafast calorimetry and electron microscopy

The Laboratory of Metal Physics and Technology (LMPT), which is part of the Department of Materials, carries out research and teaching in areas ranging from basic science to technology, mostly in metals-related areas. It is headed by Jörg F. Löffler, and is made up of physicists, materials scientists, and chemists from all around the world. LMPT’s aim is to develop new metallic materials, and to find and explore novel phenomena in metal physics and technology via detailed materials analysis and modeling.

Project background

Our laboratory has a long history of successful research in the thermodynamics of metallic alloys. Deploying ultrafast calorimetry, we recently discovered that many metallic solid-state phase transitions occur via intermediate melting and that metallic glass-forming systems can reveal multiple critical cooling rates to produce different glass types. In your project, you will combine such ultrafast calorimetry with time-resolved atomic-scale electron microscopy, atom-probe tomography and synchrotron radiation to explore fundamental phenomena in materials science and to correlate the processing of such materials with their properties. You will conduct your work in a highly interdisciplinary and stimulating research environment with excellent infrastructure, in close collaboration with scientists at EPFL, PSI, and Empa.

Job description

We are offering a doctoral position in the area of correlated ultrafast calorimetry and electron microscopy. Being trained in the various techniques, you will combine ultrafast calorimetry with electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation to explore novel materials science phenomena. Your project will be part of a Swiss-wide collaboration within the ETH Strategic Focus Area "Advanced Manufacturing", and also focus on the relation between additive manufacturing processes and the resulting chemical stability, microstructure and evolution kinetics of bulk metallic glasses.

Your profile

We are looking for a candidate, who is interested in materials physics and has a background in Physics or Materials Science. You will be expected to work independently and provide creative input on your project. You will be working with dedicated, top-notch instruments for which excellent experimental skills are required. Some of your work will be theoretical and thus also requires numerical and analytical skills. Your project is expected to start on 1 July 2021 or upon mutual agreement, and will remain open until filled.

Interested?

We look forward to receiving your online application including the following documents: a motivation letter, a detailed CV (including university transcripts), and the contact information of at least two professional reference persons. Please note that we only accept applications that are submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
