Doctoral student in environmental chemistry & surface chemistry

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Chemistry

Predicting cloud formation in the atmosphere remains today impossible, which results in large uncertainties in many scienfific and societal applications such as forecasting precipitations/drought or calculating the climate budget. While it is well known that liquid cloud droplets form by the condensation of water on aerosol particles, only a tiny fraction of these particles (called "Cloud Condensation Nuclei" or "CCN") actually grows into clouddroplets because of key properties that remain difficult to elucidate. In particular, while the volume composition of aerosol particles has been extensively studied, characterizing their surface represents an experimental challenge, especially for individual particles, for which almost no information is available. This project will investigate this unexplored aspect of the aerosol-cloud relationship by characterizing the surface properties of micron- and sub-micron-size individual atmospheric particles and determine their role in droplet growth, using cutting edge surface characterization techniques such as Atomic Force Microscopy AFM, and Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy VSFS. By indentifying the key surface properties that set apart the CCN in the aerosol populations, the project will considerably improve the understanding of cloud formation in background and polluted environments, of rain/drought predictions, and reduce the uncertainties in the climate budget.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Barbara Noziere, Professor; and Mark Rutland, Professor

What we offer

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a Master 2 degree or equivalent in chemistry, physical chemistry or relevant field,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • a strong background in physical chemistry,
  • a strong motivation for experimental work,
  • an interest for environmental topics,
  • strong problem-solving skills and abilities to analyse and work with complex issues,
  • self-motivated, detail- and goal-oriented,
  • able to both work independently and to collaborate with others.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Target degree: Doctoral degree

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
