Research Associate, Physiology & Pharmacology, Cumming School of Medicine

 

The Department of Physiology & Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 2 years (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Associate reports to the Principal Investigator and will interact with a team of graduate students and postdoctoral trainees.

The Research Associate primary purpose is to be a key contributor to the research within the unit.  This will include collect and analyze data, provide ready access to all experimental data for the faculty researcher and/or supervisor.  The Research Associate will determine equipment and supplies necessary and provide guidance/supervision to undergraduate students working in the lab.

They will work in a basic science research laboratory located in the Health Science Center, at the University of Calgary. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Successfully implement a funded research proposal
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of animal care and project protocols
  • Collect and analyze data
  • Provide ready access to all experimental data for the faculty researcher and/or supervisor
  • Determine equipment and supplies necessary
  • Provide guidance/supervision to undergraduate students working in the lab
  • Responsible for the with the design and implementation of research methods, including standard operating procedures and data collection protocols in consultation with the PI
  • Work effectively as a team member with PIs, technical staff, and other trainees
  • Conduct and design research projects independently and assist as appropriate with supervision of junior trainees
  • Keep a daily laboratory notebook of all activities
  • Plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and services
  • Prepare weekly written summaries, tables, and graphics of research results for project reports, posters and scientific presentations, and for manuscripts for publication
  • Complete statistical analyses
  • Write background reviews and preliminary results as part of writing grant applications
  • Present research results at seminars and research events to various interested groups on campus (Faculty of Medicine, Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases)

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Ph.D. degree in the area of Neurosciences, expertise in electrophysiology on dorsal root ganglia or spinal cord (ex vivo or in vivo) required
  • Relevant and recent peer-reviewed publications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and be fluent in English.
  • Understand of and Skills in Patch Clamp electrophysiology, Cell culture / Transfection methods, Immunocytochemistry, Biochemistry, Mice handling, Biostatistics required
  • Experience in Molecular Biology desirable
  • Minimum 5 years of technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline required
  • Interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments.
  • Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization
  • Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable

Additional Information

This position is part of the AUPE bargaining unit, and falls under the Technical Job Family, Phase II. (Salary range $24.15 - $35.13/hour)
