Post-Doc modelling cocoa ecophysiology and production

Are you an ambitious researcher who wants to investigate how to improve and innovate sustainable production of tropical perennial crops like cacao and implications for biodiversity and small-holder farmer livelihoods. The we have an interesting post doc position at Wageningen Plant Science for you.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated postdoc to work on a multidiciplinary research project on Crop growth simulation models. These models can be used to identify yield limiting factors, as decision support to farmers and other stakeholders, as a tool in crop breeding and to make prediction about future cocoa yields.

Cocoa is a major global commodity grown by nearly 6 million smallholder farmers across the tropics and is essential for the livelihoods and food security of tens of millions of people. Current yields of cocoa are generally very low, compared to what is possible. This enormous yield gap in combination with increasing demand puts pressure on arable land and natural biodiversity while climate change will further challenge production.

You will be part of the project which is a collaboration between Centre for Crop Systems Analysis (CSA) Wageningen University and Mondelez International. The work will provide inputs to longer-term goals and concrete deliverables, actionable recommendations are expected by Mondelez besides scientific publication.

This project will develop and use a combination of physiological crop (or plant) models and data to support transfer of research findings from the Mondelez technology centre and field trials to deployment on-farm, field level crop optimisation, and guide the future direction of research.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with the following qualifications:
