Temporary position 3 years

As a leading university hospital with a rich tradition, the Inselspital is part of the Insel Group and is a centre of medical expertise and high technology with an international reputation as well as being a first-class training and research centre.

The laboratory of the Department of Dermatology is focused on the study of human T helper cells and their role in inflammatory skin disease. We aim to better understand the mechanisms of skin inflammation and to create new therapeutic strategies.

The challenge
Skin-resident memory T (TRM) cells can persist long-term in the skin where they provide immune protection against infections. However, their aberrant activation can cause chronic inflammatory skin disease. Current treatments suppress inflammation, but fail to cure patients long-term. Thus, there is a need for a better understanding of chronic inflammation to develop curative therapies.
Recent findings suggest that the metabolic transcription factor PPAR-γ plays a crucial role in TRM-driven skin disease. Therefore, we aim to address these questions:
How does PPAR-γ regulate cellular metabolism & function in TH cells from skin?
How does the metabolic environment in skin disease influence TH cells?
How can we leverage the modulation of TH cell metabolism for therapy?
