The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following four departments:

  • The Department of Infectious Diseases
  • The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
  • The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
  • The Department of Laboratory Medicine

At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.

These open postdoc positions (one or two) are contained within Associate Professor Anders StÃ¥hlberg’s research group at Sahlgrenska Center Research for Cancer. The candidate/s will work at the Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research, a center within the University of Gothenburg in close association with Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The center is part of a strategic research effort within the Sahlgrenska Academy focused on cancer research and consists of a mixture of basic and clinical research projects with translational ambitions. Additional information about the research group: https://www.gu.se/en/research/anders-stahlberg

Subject area

Cancer Genomics and Liquid Biopsies

Subject area description

Our long-term goal is to develop new interventions for patients suffering from sarcomas and to personalize the treatment of each patient using liquid biopsy analysis. This project aims to identify novel drug targets for sarcomas using cellular and molecular approaches as well as to develop and use next generation cancer diagnostics by analyzing biomarkers in different body fluids, especially blood. The project focuses on sarcomas, including pediatric sarcomas. Our work is in close collaboration with other partners within academy, health care and industry.

Job assignments

Within this project you will plan, design and perform research activities with the aims to identify novel drug targets in sarcomas and to develop and use biomarker profiling in blood samples for next generation cancer diagnostics. You will be working with cellular techniques, 3D-approaches and clinical samples as well as molecular methods to analyze proteins, RNA and DNA. Development of methods and handling experimental data are essential parts within the project. The work will focus on sarcoma, but the approaches are generic and can be applied to most tumor entities.
