Postdoctoral Fellow with a focus on education of youth for sustainable practices towards a Net-zero Energy Transition

Applications are invited for a three- and half-year position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the research project EMPOWER: Sustainable Batteries in Mobility - (Em)powering a Net-zero Energy Transition (TeamLearn). The position is affiliated to the research group “Knowledge, Learning and Governance in Higher Education and Work “(HEDWORK) at the Department of Education and the UiO:Energy Convergence Environments at the University of Oslo, Norway.

The EMPOWER project takes an interdisciplinary research and education perspective to investigate the role of electric vehicle batteries in enabling a sustainable net-zero energy transition in Norway. Norway aims at a net-zero energy system by 2050 and the decarbonisation of all transport segments is crucial. While batteries represent a central technology for zero-carbon transportation, they also pose complex socio-ecological problems. EMPOWER examines study the diversity of challenges (social, environmental, legal) found in the design, production, use, re-use, and recycling of batteries.

EMPOWER aims to:i) develop a common definition of sustainable batteries for mobility across industry and involved disciplines; ii) explore representations of this sustainability concept in EV production and utilization; iii) determine how interdisciplinary criteria impacts the design of net-zero energy systems; and iv) co-design educational offer for young people and early career researchers to facilitate their interdisciplinary understanding of battery-cantered research. Read more about the EMPOWER project on the project website.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to contribute to the EMPOWER project by researching interdisciplinary approaches, methods and designs for young peoples’ learning about sustainability in relation to EV battery use. This work will be conducted as part of work package 6, which examines how the interdisciplinary research team generates knowledge in collaboration; how this knowledge can become embedded in education curricula; and how young people reason and learn about sustainable EV battery use. The applicant should be familiar with and use a design-based approach to coordinate data collection and contact with participants in the empirical studies in wp6 (pupils aged 13-19).  The applicant is expected to work with data collection and analysis of data using either a qualitative, quantitative or mixed method approach framed by design-based research. In addition, the applicant is expected to participate in co-design meetings, joint project activities and take on tasks related to data management.

The announced postdoctoral position will be connected to the research group HEDWORK. The group comprises researchers with different interdisciplinary backgrounds and offers an internationally oriented and stimulating research environment, with a connection to research communities in higher education, learning sciences, academic development, and educational research worldwide.

The UiO:Energy Convergence environment and the EMPOWER project offer early career scientists an inspiring  research and education environment, as part of an interdisciplinary team of eight senior researchers/professors and six early career researchers from four faculties and six departments.
