Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Arctic Marine Stress Ecology

Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow available at the Section for Aquatic Biology and Toxicology, Department of Biosciences, University of Oslo (on condition of external funding).

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who will join a research project funded by a Young Research Talent Grant from the Research Council of Norway. The project will focus on overwintering in Arctic zooplankton.

The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of 2.5 years 10% of which is devoted to required duties, usually in the form of teaching activities.

No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.

Project description / Development plan:

As part of the Young Research Talent grant, the available postdoc will conduct experiments, investigating the single and combined effects of marine heatwaves and ocean acidification on overwintering of Arctic Calanus copepods. The capacity to survive the long, dark, cold and unproductive winter is critical for most Arctic species. Many Arctic ectotherms have therefore evolved special adaptations to severe winter conditions by investment in large storage deposits combined with lowering metabolism to a minimum in winter. However, we do not know how multiple stressors may affect overwintering Arctic species. This is a critical period and failure in surviving winter can have ecological consequences for the entire ecosystem. This project will explore the physiological and omics mechanisms for direct, delayed, and transgenerational effects of marine heatwaves and ocean acidification on Arctic Calanus copepods. Activities in the project will include several field trips to collect Calanus copepods from Svalbard and long-term experiments over the winter period in the laboratory at the University of Oslo.

We seek a highly motivated, enthusiastic candidate that has a completed PhD degree (or other corresponding education equivalents to a Norwegian doctoral degree) in marine ecology, particularly molecular ecology. Candidates with experience in experiments with ocean acidification and publishing papers in leading journals are highly encouraged to apply.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

Host institution and partner institution:

The postdoc project and training will be based at the Aquatic Biology and Toxicology (AQUA), Department of Biosciences, University of Oslo, with collaboration with The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS).

The postdoc will be working in a large research environment with diverse expertise in marine ecology, ecotoxicology, terrestrial and soil ecotoxicology. Our research involves a range of trophic levels, from dissolved organic matter (DOM) feeders, zooplankton and fish to whales.

The postdoc will be supervised by Dr. Khuong V. Dinh, and co-supervised by Prof. Katrine Borgå and Prof. Ketil Hylland at the University of Oslo and Prof. Janne E. Søreide at The University Centre in Svalbard.
