Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Experimental Realization and Characterization of Novel Organic Ferroelectrics

A two-year position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow is available at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Oslo (UiO).

The position is part of a Norwegian Young Research Talents Grant from the Research Council of Norway led by Assoc. Prof. Kristian Berland at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). The project is dedicated to developing novel ferroelectric organic molecular crystals (FOX). FOX is a joint project between NMBU and UiO. The successful candidate will work closely with Prof. Carl Henrik Gørbitz, an expert in X-ray diffraction, UiO, and Assoc. Prof. Berland. Other members of the UiO team include Prof. Ola Nilsen (materials synthesis and characterization) and Dr. Niels Højmark Andersen (Raman spectroscopy).

The FOX projects sets out to understand key trends and parameters responsible for ferroelectric properties in molecular crystals, develop effective data mining and design strategies, discover or design new materials, and realize/characterize promising organic ferroelectrics.

The candidate will benefit from a strong international network and will be encouraged to conduct a 3-month research visit to the Prof. M. Kemerink group at the Centre for Advanced Materials Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg.

No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at UiO.

Starting date preferentially no later than September 1st, 2022. The appointment is a fulltime position and is for a period of two years.

Job description / Project description / Development plan:

The main activities associated with the position are:

Crystallization and XRD study of organic ferroelectrics.

Dielectric/ferroelectric measurements.

Second-harmonic generation of selected organic ferroelectrics at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, to understand better nature of phase transitions.

Raman spectroscopy measurements of selected organic ferroelectrics, to gain insight into ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transitions

We seek a highly motivated individual with a strong background in material science/condensed- matter physics/solid-state chemistry, who is familiar with one or more of the methods described above. Experience with experimental work on molecular crystals and/or ferroelectrics would be desirable.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a leading scientific position within or beyond academia. In this respect, we encourage applications from ambitious and goal-oriented individuals who are engaged to make a difference. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan in collaboration with their main supervisor no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.
