The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

We are currently seeking a highly talented, innovative and results-driven researcher for a postdoctoral position in Mitochondrial Biogenesis in the Martin Ott laboratory at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Institute of Biomedicine at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Mitochondrial Biogenesis.

Subject area description

We are looking for an experienced researcher with expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry or structural biology. The aim of the project is to map proteins that interact with the organelle's own ribosomes, how these proteins are organized and how they mediate specific steps in gene expression/protein biogenesis. A particular focus is to understand how protein synthesis is regulated and linked to the biogenesis of the respiratory chain.

Job assignments

The research will focus on the characterization of mitochondrial ribosomes using biochemical, structural and other molecular methods. The candidate is encouraged and expected to work independently and to contribute to project planning. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the laboratory's other work, as well as to supervise students at both master's and doctoral level, if necessary.

Eligibility

A doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scientific excellence, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.

Assessment

We are looking for a candidate who has a particular interest in molecular biology. A suitable candidate has a doctorate in biology/chemistry or related fields (for example molecular biology, structural biology, biochemistry, or biophysics). A background in a relevant field as well as experience in cloning, cell culture (preferably in eukaryotic systems) and protein purification is a merit. We value good communication skills and scientific integrity. The candidate needs to be careful, responsible and be able to work both independently and in groups. Good knowledge of English, both written and spoken, is necessary. We value greatly personal integrity.

Job assignments

We are looking for a person at the post-doc level with skills and experience to develop and execute advanced statistical and epidemiological analyses in cardiometabolic register based research projects, with particular focus on obesity and COVID-19. The research referred to includes programming and advanced statistical methods in register research.

The applicant will also work with administrative tasks and be a support for doctoral students within the research group. The tasks require high ability to work independently. The applicant must be able to communicate in speech and writing with administrative and technical personnel at Swedish quality or administrative registers, and is required to have insights and knowledge with respect to the legal aspects of using Swedish registers for research purposes. The research environment includes several postdoctoral researchers, researchers and doctoral students. 

Eligibility

To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.

Assessment

We are looking for a motivated researcher with a doctoral degree in medicine or public health. The applicant must have documented experience and education in cardiometabolic registry-based research, with a special focus on obesity and obesity related risk factors, with publications in relevant research areas, with a focus on obesity and its risk factors, and from a public health perspective.

We attach great importance to personal suitability. The applicant must have good co-operative and initiative skills and the ability to work independently. The applicant should also have extensive knowledge in epidemiology or biostatistics programming to perform data management and statistical analysis using SAS, R or equivalent software. The applicant must have experience in working with large national administrative and health databases. Good communication in English, both orally and in writing is a requirement.

PostDoc in physiological plant ecology and climate change research

 

The research group Physiological Plant Ecology of Prof. Dr. Ansgar Kahmen of the Department of Environmental Sciences is looking for a postdoc who will act as scientific manager for the Swiss Canopy Crane II (SCC II) experimental site in Hölstein BL, https://ppe.duw.unibas.ch/en/sccii/. At the SCC II site we conduct long-term experimental research assessing the effects of drought on mature temperate forest. The workload of the position is 80%, and it is initially limited to 2 years.

Your position

Two main tasks are associated with the position. One is to overlook and maintain key scientific infrastructure, in particular the system of automated climate, soil and tree physiological sensors, and manage the data streams and databases that originate from these sensors. The second task is to perform original research at the experimental site in physiological plant ecology or biogeochemistry.

Your profile

We are looking for a dynamic, reliable and motivated candidate with a PhD in biology, forestry, environmental sciences or related disciplines. Strong interest in process-oriented research in plant physiology, experience with sensor networks (automated dendrometers, sap-flow systems) and with processing and statistical analyses of large datasets is important. PhD candidate in transportation noise epidemiology

 


Your PhD project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), will address several important research questions in relation to acute and long-term health effects from transportation noise to enhance our understanding of effective individual and population-level prevention measures. You will investigate acute effects of military aircraft noise on mental health in patients of a psychiatric clinic located near a military airport. To do so, you will conduct noise measurements and combine with modelling for a time series analysis on acts of aggression, daily hypnotic drug consumption and mental health symptoms of patients. In a second project you will elucidate the interplay of long-term road traffic noise exposure, physical activity and sleep for various cardio-metabolic bio-markers in a sample of 650 individuals in the age range of 20 to >80 years by applying sophisticated epidemiological data analysis methods.

The successful candidate will be employed by Swiss TPH at the standard salary rate for doctoral students defined by the SNSF. The PhD position will be for a period of three years. The working place will be Swiss TPH – an institute associated with University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland. The position may start from 1 August 2021 onwards.

Experience and skill requirements

We seek to fill a faculty position in the area of machine perception for intelligent vehicles at the level of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (tenured). The position covers environment perception and localization & mapping for intelligent vehicles and mobile robots, in complex environments (e.g. urban traffic). Specific topics of interest include:

  • 2D/3D Object detection;
  • 2D/3D Semantic scene analysis;

The mission of the Cognitive Robotics (CoR) department at TU Delft is to develop intelligent robots and vehicles that will advance mobility, productivity and quality of life. The CoR department combines fundamental research with experimental work on physical demonstrators in areas such as self-driving vehicles, collaborative industrial robots, mobile manipulators and haptic interfaces. Of special interest are robotic solutions for complex, human-inhabited environments. Requirements

PhD Student in Computational Soil Mechanics

 

Applications are invited for a PhD student to be based within the Section of Geo-Engineering, to work on the development, implementation and application of a multiscale modelling tool as a numerical testing environment for geomaterials.

The first objective of this project is to develop and implement a numerical environment for studying the behavior of heterogeneous geomaterials in an existing finite element code. Based on the explicit modelling of fine-scale heterogeneities and discrete micromechanical structure, the homogenized, large-scale constitutive behavior is to be derived. This homogenized response of heterogeneous soils has to provide input for the formulation of constitutive relations.

Complementary to experimental element testing, the application of the numerical testing environment will allow efficient and rigorous studies of the effects of heterogeneity and microstructure on the (Multiphysics) behavior of soils. In combination with stochastic modelling, this approach will be used to formulate and calibrate stochastic material models. These models account for the small-scale heterogeneous nature of soils as well as for the associated uncertainties and will form the input for stochastic numerical models for the reliability-based design and assessment of geotechnical structures.

Requirements

  • Applicants should possess a very good first degree in Civil Engineering, Geoscience, Mechanics of Materials or other related discipline.
  • A good understanding of continuum mechanics and numerical modelling is essential, as well as an aptitude for scientific programming for the implementation of numerical methods in existing and new finite element codes.
  • Communication skills are important, and applicants should have a high level of proficiency in written and spoken English. If your mother language is not English and you do not hold a degree from an institution in which English is the language of instruction, you must submit proof of English proficiency from either TOEFL (minimum total score of 100) or IELTS (minimum total score of 7.0). Proof of English language proficiency certificates older than two years are not accepted.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to cooperate with other members of the research team and external collaborators.

The Department of Geoscience and Engineering resides within the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, and encompasses 5 sections: Applied Geology; Applied Petrophysics and Geophysics; Geo-Engineering; Resource Engineering; and Reservoir Engineering. Current collaborations between Geo-Engineering and the wider Faculty include the Section of Offshore Engineering, and the Departments of Structural Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, and Geoscience and Remote Sensing.

The Section of Geo-Engineering has 12 full-time and 6 part-time academic staff, and ~40 PhD and Post-Doctoral researchers. Areas of expertise include soil mechanics, dykes and embankments, foundation engineering, underground space technology, engineering geology, and geo-environmental engineering. There are extensive experimental laboratory facilities, including large-scale soil-structure interaction testing facilities and a geotechnical centrifuge, as well as excellent computing facilities including access to national High Performance Computing networks.

Postdoc Smart structures design with machine learning

Job description

Smart materials have been widely successful in structure programming and stimuli-induced shape change with applications ranging from sustainable transportation to deep space exploration. However, the process of developing large-scale smart structures with tailored mechanical response has traditionally followed a forward design paradigm: computationally or experimentally testing a wide range of possible structures results in an effective structure- to-property map. Capitalizing on this strategy, trial-and-error or classical design optimization methods are unfortunately expensive, sensitive to the initial design guess, and yield only a sub-optimal design. A beneficial alternative is the on-demand inverse design of optimal structures, wherein an appropriate design is identified directly which achieves a targeted property (e.g., morphed shape).  To this end, as the technologies for data-efficient machine learning (ML) become more mature, it is time to merge the benefits of smart materials and ML-accelerated design for application to large-scale structures.

This project will focus on the development of a ML-based inverse design framework for origami-inspired large-scale adaptive structures with integrated shape memory alloy based joints. Origami constructions will be leveraged for reduction of the design space, improved design interpretability, and data-efficiency of the ML-accelerated inverse design task. Potential immediate applications include inverse-designed morphing turbine blades, self-deployable wind and solar sails, multi-stiffness floating structures, adaptive cranes, reconfigurable grabs and silos, and many more.

The project is collaborative and inter-disciplinary in nature and will be jointly supervised by Dr. Jovana Jovanova (Assistant Professor, Maritime and Transport Technology) and Dr. Sid Kumar (Assistant Professor, Materials Science and Engineering) with expertise in smart structures and ML-based design techniques, respectively.

Requirements

For this position you should have the following:

  • PhD in mechanical engineering, mechanical design, material science, applied mechanics or related areas,
  • Good publication track-record,
  • Good communication and writing skills in English,
  • Desirable: experience with smart materials such as shape memory alloys,
  • Desirable: proficiency in machine learning and data-driven methods.
