Postdoc position in Forest Biodiversity Conservation

We are seeking a postdoc for a collaborative project between SLU and Stora Enso’s Forest Division. The project is part of a larger research initiative between SLU and Stora Enso where several researchers, postdocs and PhDs are currently involved, which opens opportunities for collaboration within SLU but also outside academia.

This postdoc will focus on developing indices that can describe patterns and changes of biodiversity to be used for biodiversity conservation in practical forestry. The indices will be based on species and structure data from a large-scale field survey conducted in both Sweden and Finland. The data includes species data on bryophytes, lichens, polypores and beetles from 240 field plots, making this a uniquely large forest biodiversity dataset. The collaboration with Stora Enso generates a high societal relevance to the project.

The successful candidate will be affiliated to the Department of Ecology at SLU, but the postdoc project as such is ran in tight collaboration with researchers at the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies and the Species Information Centre at SLU, as well as the Natural Resources Institute (LUKE) in Finland.

The Department of Ecology educates, conduct research and collaborates for a wise use of nature's resources in the future. Building on our world-leading research on species ecology and ecosystems, we clarify how we can use land, water, and forests without loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Duties:

The postdoc will analyze data from the aforementioned field survey to develop indices with the aim to gain better understanding of factors controlling species diversity in relation to forest management. The postdoc is expected to contribute actively to the development and planning of the studies, independently coordinate the practical work and analyze the collected data and write scientific publications together with the research group. Moreover, the postdoc will write popular science reports, which will be used within Stora Enso’s organization and contribute to the collaboration activities between Stora Enso and SLU.

Qualifications:

The applicant should hold a PhD in ecology (or in a similar relevant subject). Since a postdoctoral appointment is a career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates obtained a doctoral degree within the last three years. Experience from relevant research questions (terrestrial ecology, nature conservation in forests, forestry, landscape ecology, conservation strategies, especially in Northern Europe) is a merit. Experience from statistical analyses of large data sets is considered a merit along with a strong publication record (in relation to the time since the doctoral degree). The applicant is expected to be able to take own initiatives and work independently and in a group. Excellent skills in written and oral communication in English are required.

A quantitative geneticist in an international network

Since its establishment in 1995, the Interbull Centre has held a unique position in the international dairy industry. Through a truly international collaboration, the Interbull Centre provides international genetic and genomic services for the improvement of cattle to a worldwide network, involving organisations and data from 37 countries on five continents. Genetic Data Analysts at the Interbull Centre work with some of the world’s most renowned animal geneticists represented in Interbull and ICAR Committees and Working Groups for the improvement and expansion of its services.

The Interbull Centre is now seeking a quantitative geneticist to strengthen the delivery and development of genetic and genomic evaluations in beef and dairy. The right candidate will join a small, enthusiastic group of people with backgrounds in genetics and information technology. You will report to the Interbull Centre Director, work in line with the Interbull Centre quality management system, and have the opportunity to attend international conferences and technical meetings.

Duties: 

As a geneticist at the Interbull Centre, you will be part of the team that carries out international genetic and genomic evaluations of bovine populations. The focus is on performing and developing data analysis for service provision, interacting directly with our customers across the globe.

Your responsibilities include:

• Service Delivery: Computation of genetic evaluations – including data management, estimation of genetic parameters. In-house training to provide Interbull and Interbeef evaluations will be provided
• Implementation of New Services: Contributing to applied research in conjunction with Interbull and ICAR committees and working groups, service documentation, and support for internal and external users. 

Qualifications:  

• PhD in animal/plant breeding, statistical/computational genetics/genomics or related fields
• Demonstrated strong analytical skills and a minimum of four years’ experience with quantitative genetic analyses, preferably within genetic evaluation of cattle
• Proficiency in the following skills: working in GNU/Linux, shell scripting, handling of large data sets, and programming skills (Python or Fortran (or, to a lesser degree, R))
• Good oral and written proficiency in English is required, as our working language is English
• You must be service-minded and able to handle workload peaks and to take fast and well-motivated decisions.

Department of Agricultural Research for Northern Sweden

The Department of Agricultural Research for Northern Sweden (NJV) in Umeå conducts research and education in crop and animal sciences, with a specific focus on forage-based animal production. The common threads in the activities are efficiency and sustainability for the whole production chain, from seeding the forage crop and feeding the animals, to the effect on products of milk and meat. The crop science group conducts research on cultivation of forages, which includes agronomic studies, development and use of crop models, and production management with remote sensing tools and spectral techniques. The department contributes to education in bachelor’s and master’s programs in agricultural sciences, and to standalone courses. The recruitment of a Senior lecturer/Associate Professor is a strategy for developing and improving the research and education within this central subject of SLU. Duties

The senior lecturer is expected to:

• develop and lead research in the subject area with a focus on cultivation and quality of forage crops,

She/he will work within Viltbild, a collaborative project between SLU and the Swedish Association for Hunting and Wildlife Management (SAHWM) aimed at collecting, processing and analysing data on a wide range of wildlife species from camera traps. The vision is that Viltbild becomes an important citizen-science platform where images collected by hunters and other stakeholders contribute to monitoring, conservation and management of diverse wildlife species in Sweden. The successful applicant will lead the development of AI components of the Viltbild’s web portal and be part of a growing conservation technology hub at WFE. Duties:

The successful candidate will develop machine learning algorithms and analytical tools to analyse wildlife images from camera traps and closely work with Viltbild’s core project team consisting of Dr. Tim Hofmeester, Associate Prof. Joris Cromsigt and Associate Prof. Fredrik Widemo (SLU) and Filip Ånöstam (SAHWM). You will also closely collaborate with other project members as well as test users and students. You will develop machine learning algorithms that can automatically identify Scandinavian mammal species and/or separate adult and juvenile animals from camera trap images, as well as develop new analytical features to process this data into relevant outputs for wildlife conservation and management. You will also perform cutting-edge research and methods development, including the writing of scientific articles, in the field of conservation technology, and more specifically AI and wildlife ecology. There will be a lot of room to develop own research interests related to the application of AI to camera trapping images.

Qualifications:

Applicants should either hold i) a PhD in computer science, data science, machine learning or a similar subject, or ii) a PhD in ecology or similar with strong interest in technical solutions in wildlife monitoring and experience with complex quantitative models. We are looking for a highly motivated and team-oriented candidate with documented experience with AI and image recognition. An affinity with wildlife ecology and/or management and with the use of camera traps count as a merit. An understanding of the Swedish language, or strong willingness to learn basic Swedish within the first 6 months, will also be a merit.

The Department of Energy and Technology

The Department of Energy and Technology conducts research and education with a focus on how agriculture can contribute to a sustainable society. The department has a bilingual work environment and about 80 employees who are part of five research groups with expertise in technology and systems for sustainable production of food and bioenergy. In terms of research methodologies, we have extensive competency in systems analysis, including environmental systems analysis including LCA, applied statistics and mathematics, biological waste treatment, source-separating sanitation, logistics and automation. The department have the responsibility of more than 30 courses at basic and advanced level within the Agronomy programs, bachelor and master programs in environmental science and biology given at SLU. We also have courses in the engineering programs of “Environmental and Water Engineering” and “Environmental Sciences”, given together with Uppsala University. The department is part of the Land, Water and Environmental Centre (MVM) at SLU where the research is conducted in areas such as environmental changes in soil and water, understanding of biological, physical and chemical processes in soil and water systems, optimization of food, bioenergy and circular systems and method development in soil and forestry.

SLU also has access to the national infrastructure UPPMAX (Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science), a resource available for high-performance computing (HPC). Adjacent to the campus is also the RISE facility, where there is a test bed for research on digitization in agriculture. There has been an established collaboration between the department and RISE for a long time. The research at SLU are broad and opportunities for trans disciplinary research. There are great opportunities for applied research in the agricultural sector with access to SLU:s long-term field trials as well as land to establish new trials. SLU:s campus in Uppsala also has access to a lysimeter plant, greenhouse and phytotron as well as proximity to the research station SLU Lövsta agricultural research, which is Northern Europe's most modern facility for research and education about livestock productionfarm animals.

Subject Area

The subject includes digitisation with a focus on the application of automation, robotics or mechatronics to achieve resource-efficient and sustainable agriculture.

Duties

The professor is expected to lead a research group within the area of employment and

• develop and lead an internationally successful and externally funded research program
• develop and lead teaching at undergraduate, advanced and postgraduate level
• participate in postgraduate education and supervise doctoral students
• be able to teach Swedish at bachelor's level within four years; the department will support the successful candidate to help achieve this objective

Postdoctoral scholarship in Molecular Biology: Plant stress signalling and susceptibility genes

Duties:

There is a need for new sources of resistance in order to counteract the evolution of pathogenic microbes and to develop sustainable agricultural practices. Pivotal in this development is to better understand plant-pathogen interactions and the defence-response mechanisms. To identify new players in plant-pathogen interactions for further functional assessments, we have generated quantitative proteomics data from three different immunity reactions in potato. Now we have data suggesting that three of them are directly involved in immune signalling and stress signalling. One of them seems to be directly involved in the balance between defence and photosynthesis.

The molecular mechanisms at play will be studied and validated by molecular and biological assays, including CRISPR/Cas9. Experiments will mainly be carried out in laboratory and controlled green-house environments, but also in field trials, with both genetically modified (GM) and gene edited plants being used in the field study.

 An appointment as Professor in forest soils science is vacant at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management at SLU, Umeå. The department includes 100 people of which about 10 are professors. We conduct research and teach about how relevant ecosystem processes regulate, interact and affect the forest landscape. An important part of our mission is to understand how different systems for forestry and management affect the forest's ecosystem services, which is why we study both managed and unmanaged environments.

Subject Area

The subject area of this position is forest soil science with a focus on boreal and northern temperate forest ecosystems. The research comprises both fundamental and applied questions of relevance for the subject area, and may include biotic as well as abiotic components of the soil system.  

Duties

The professor shall: 

• act in accordance with the vision, goals and basic values of SLU
• act in accordance with the departmental strategy by contributing to the development of scientifically based principles for management of forest ecosystems
• develop and lead an internationally successful environment for research and education
• apply for external funding in competition at national and international level
• contribute to knowledge about the forest landscape in managed and unmanaged environments
• lead, develop and participate in teaching and supervision of students at all levels
• collaborate with other researchers and the society regionally, nationally and internationally
• supervise PhD students and postdocs
• disseminate research findings

Non Swedish-speaking staff members are expected to, within four years of first being employed, have sufficient knowledge of Swedish/Scandinavian to understand information in Swedish.

Qualifications

The applicant shall:

• have a PhD degree and have attained the rank of a Swedish “docent” (roughly: associate professor or reader) in a subject area relevant for the position, or equivalent scientific competence
• be scientifically skilled within the subject area of this appointment 
• be pedagogically skilled 
• have good ability to communicate in written and spoken English 

Assessment Criteria

Assessment criteria for appointment of a professor will primarily be based on the degree to which the applicant possesses the required qualifications specified for the position.  

The assessment of scientific skills will consider:

• completed research activities and ongoing research within the subject area
• future research vision within the subject regarding both in managed and unmanaged environments
• ability to independently initiate, lead and develop innovative research within the subject area
• ability to attract external funding in competition  

The assessment of pedagogic skills will consider the ability to:

• plan, conduct and evaluate their own teaching
• supervise and examine undergraduate and master level students
• supervise and examine at doctoral level
• convey and implement their pedagogical vision
• integrate research and academic thinking in teaching  

Furthermore, the assessment will consider the applicant’s degree of skills in:

• leading, developing and managing academic units and staff
• interacting with relevant stakeholders and society
• dissemination of information on research and development projects  

Equal attention shall be given to the assessment of scientific skills, as to pedagogic skills, as well as to other skills.  

The candidate who after an overall assessment of skills and qualifications, is considered most suitable to carry out and develop the work and contribute to a positive development of the activities within the field will be suggested for the appointment.

 Docent, University Teacher Kirsi Gröndahl-Yli-Hannuksela is looking for a PhD student (Doctoral Researcher) to join her laboratory for a fixed-term position on a project “Pregnancy, delivery and streptococci” funded by the Academy of Finland.

Research group has an ongoing clinical study in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Turku University Hospital. The project aims to understand the prevalence of asymptomatic carriage of beta haemolytic streptococci during pregnancy. In addition, the association of streptococcal carriage with possible complications of the mother or the newborn is investigated. Doctoral Researcher will be working in this project at the Institute of Biomedicine. Position includes laboratory research on the fields of microbiology and molecular biology (such as analysing the clinical study samples, bacterial identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, whole genome sequencing and metagenomics/microbiome analytics).

The successful applicant is expected to begin in October 2022, but starting date is negotiable. The duration of the position is two years with a possibility for an extension.

Qualifications

The applicant must have a higher university degree (e.g. Master’s degree) in biomedicine, microbiology or other equivalent field. The candidate should be highly motivated to aim at PhD, have good communication skills and ability to work productively. Self-initiative and preciseness are appreciated. Fluency in English is a requirement. Merit is given to applicants who have previous lab experience especially in microbiology, molecular biology or genomics.

The qualification requirements of the position are available on the University of Turku Rules of Procedure. In case the selected candidate does not yet have the right to study for a doctoral degree at the University of Turku, the title of Project Researcher will be used at first, and the study right for a doctoral degree should be applied in the next suitable call: University of Turku Graduate School (UTUGS) and Doctoral Programmes

Salary

The salary offered is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. For a doctoral/project researcher, the salary is at levels 2-4 on the job demands chart, where the task-specific salary component is approx. 2108,40–2628,85 euro per month. In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal performance component is a 6% – 50% of the task-specific base salary. A six (6) month trial period applies to the positions.

Project researcher/Postdoctoral researcher in single cell data analytics

 We are seeking an expert in data analytics and bioinformatics to join our core facility teams at Single cell Omics Facility and Turku Medical Bioinformatics Centre (MBC). Together we strive to support high-quality research at academic and industrial sector by enabling services for the emerging fields of single-cell and spatially resolved gene expression and protein profiling as part of the national Biocenter Finland infrastructure network. Essential qualifications

• Experience in various bioinformatic data analysis tools

• Prior experience in single-cell sequencing data analysis

• Academic degree ( Master, PhD, or soon-to-be)  in a relevant discipline

• Prior experience in mass cytometry data analysis

Salary

The salary is determined by the collective agreement system of Finnish universities. The position belongs to research personnel and the salary will be 2300-3000 eur/month for a person holding MSc degree and 3100 - 3600 eur/month for a person holding PhD degree. 

 

Duration of the contract

The start of employment is negotiable. The position is fixed-term for two years, with a possibility for extension. The position is subject to a six-month trial period.
