Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational linguistics focused on multimodal coreference

The Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability (CLASP) is based in FLoV at the University of Gothenburg, and is funded by a 10-year grant from the Swedish Research Council (2015-2025). CLASP is devoted to research and advanced training in the application of probabilistic modeling and machine learning methods to core issues in linguistic theory and cognition. Subject area description 

The candidate will carry out their research at CLASP, within a project interested in multimodal coreference resolution.

The overarching goal of the project is to construct a multimodal coreference resolution system (MCRS) that uses text and visual input. We will experiment with crowdsourcing methods to annotate training and test corpora. MCRS will be lightweight in that it will use relatively small amounts of data for supervised learning. It will be trainable in a comparatively short period of time. We will build MCRS on top of existing generic deep learning systems, like multimodal BERT, rather than constructing a large, complex special purpose device. MCRS will be a genuine coreference resolution system. It will seek to determine the specific antecedents, and the graphic object to which an anaphoric expression refers. Its performance will be evaluated on the accuracy with which it performs this task, rather than by its success in returning a ranked class of candidates that includes the ground truth antecedent. The project will explore different ways of integrating visual and linguistic representations in integrated embeddings, and we will determine which ones are most efficient in supporting MCR.

 

Job assignments

The expected candidate is expected to:

• Collect, compile and process coreference resolution corpora from different genres, domains and methodologies
• Develop and evaluate coreference resolution models
• Carry out evaluations of multimodal systems, i.e., images and text (in particular for reference and discourse phenomena)
• Develop a multimodal coreference resolution system that uses text and visual input

The expected duration of the assignment is 2 years, with possibility of 1-year extension.

The research will be conducted in English.

Apart from research, supplementary duties may include mentoring graduate students, course design, and/or teaching-related activities. These duties are not mandatory and will not exceed 20% of the position’s responsibilities.

The holder of the position is expected to carry out her/his research in Gothenburg and to actively participate in the research group's workshops, seminars, and conferences.

 

Eligibility 

Eligible for a postdoctoral position are those with a PhD or other foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to PhD. Assessment 

Candidates should have experience with machine learning including deep learning and neural networks, preferably with a background in mainstream natural language processing tasks and methods (e.g., language modeling, parsing, coreference, machine translation, discourse parsing, etc). Interest in the cognitive processes/models behind human language processing and understanding is a key advantage for the position. Experience with psycholinguistic methods focused on designing and running traditional sentence processing methodologies (eye-tracking, pace reading, judgement studies and cloze tests, spacebar reaction time, etc.) is also desirable.

Scientific proficiency is the most important criterion for assessment, and special attention will be given to the applicant’s PhD thesis and other publications. Documented good interpersonal skills, good skills in terms of planning and organizing research, and good skills in communicating research results is also meritorious.

Computational Linguistics is the application of computational methods to the representation and processing of natural language. For this position, the focus is on combining symbolic and machine learning approaches for Natural Language Inference. Specifically, we aim to investigate what kind of logic existing leading deep learning model are capable of learning, through probing for structural properties of the learned entailment relation, such as reflexivity and monotonicity; and design new kinds of deep learning models that are specifically attuned to certain logical/algebraic structures, through using compositional unitary representations.

 

Job assignments

The purpose of the position is to give the employee an opportunity to consolidate and develop her/his scientific skills by conducting research in CLASP's core areas of research in cooperation with the research group.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Political Science, with a focus on Drivers and Outcomes of Resilience During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Malawi

The Department of Political Science is an open and socially engaged institution, in the middle of a vibrant city. In 2022, the ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities placed the department number 1 in Sweden, 5 in Europe, and 19 in the world in political science. We are very research-active and offer a lively research environment with several thematic seminar series and internal workshops. The Department’s research revolves around elections, democracy, governance, corruption, development, forms of government, globalization, the environment and politics, as well as European issues. The project, Survive, Thrive, or Deprive? Drivers and Outcomes of Resilience During the Covid-19 Pandemic in Malawi, examines why some individuals and communities respond better than others to crises, and the longer-term effects of crises on governance and welfare. Examining community governance in Malawi during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, it aims to answer three questions: 1) What explains when and how communities implement and enforce policies to mitigate the pandemic's negative effects? When/why does this impact poverty and inequality? 2) How do community factors and individuals' characteristics affect how individuals manage crises? and 3) How has the pandemic altered community social ties and authority?

During the project we will implement face-to-face (F2F) household and elite surveys as well as conduct case studies and focus groups. The newly collected data will be combined with F2F surveys with households and elites conducted in 2019 before the pandemic and three telephone surveys conducted during the pandemic. Together, this data will allow us to yield theoretical understandings of resilience, health crisis response, and authority while supporting policymakers and development specialists to alleviate poverty and other negative consequences of crises.

The Department of Political Science and the Governance and Local Development Institute are looking for a postdoc to work with the Survive, Thrive, or Deprive? Drivers and Outcomes of Resilience During the Covid-19 Pandemic in Malawi project and related research. Employment will be full time for two years, residential in Gothenburg, with a flexible start date in Summer/Fall 2023.

Job assignments

The employment as a postdoctoral fellow aims to give the employee an early opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher after completing their doctoral degree and to create the conditions for further qualifications. The person employed as a postdoctoral fellow must mainly conduct research. Teaching can be included in the work duties, but to a maximum of one-fifth of the working time.

As a postdoctoral researcher with GLD, you will be expected to spend your time on GLD- or project-oriented tasks including: Assisting in performing literature reviews and developing the theoretical framing within the project, the development of survey and focus group instruments, the creation of analysis plans, and the writing of academic articles. You will also collaborate with Professor Ellen Lust, Dr. Erica Ann Metheney, and other researchers in the program, as relevant, to conduct research and disseminate findings through articles and presentations.

Eligibility

Duties 

The researchers will work in close collaboration with the grant coordinator Visiting Professor Maria Grahn-Farley and Professor Ester Herlin-Karnell, in collaboration with other members of the project. The particular focus of the research will be on EU as a global human rights actor in relation to Third Countries, with a focus on the possible regulatory gaps and overlap occurring when States use Human Rights Justifications (HRJ) for to legitimize and defend their decisions and positions. The project will identify gaps in the individual human rights regulations and protection, serving as underpinning data for our recommendations to EU in support of a multinational human rights system and promotion of transnational democratic governance. The project will seek to develop a theory of HRJ and a process for Systematic Ongoing Civil Society Engagement revitalizing a more dynamic bottom up democratic process.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will conduct and publish their own research, provide a review of related research and public activity and investigate possible partnerships with academic and civil society groups. They will help manage workshops, conferences and working groups, help produce group working papers and assist in the academic and public development of the programme. They will present papers at conferences or public meetings and represent the research group at external meetings/seminars. They will also carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions and research groups and undertake a small amount of teaching duties.

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

Job assignments

You will collaborate with Andrea Spehar, Associate Professor in Political Science (Director of CGM and project leader of (SIPGI)) and Isabell Schierenbeck, Professor of Political Science (project participant within SIPGI). You will write at least two scientific articles based on previously collected qualitative interview material, participate in the organization of a scientific workshop and/or conference, contribute to the writing of research application.

There will be excellent opportunities for intellectual development and mentorship as well as developing an independent research agenda within the overall framework of the project.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who has:

• relevant master’s degree or Doctoral degree in Social Sciences
• documented very good skills in speaking and writing in English
• experience in education or research in the field of migration and integration
• experience working with interview material
• good organizational skills
• experience in writing scientific texts

In addition to the basic qualifications, suitability for the project will be assessed. The limited time scale of the project makes it crucial that the candidate can quickly get started on the work. The Centre for Cellular Imaging (CCI) at the Core Facilities is one of the leading academic imaging facilities in Sweden providing expertise and access to advanced microscopy to the research community, both locally and at other Swedish universities and abroad. It is part of the National Microscopy Infrastructure since 2016, a node of the Euro-Bioimaging-ERIC consortium and member of the SciLifeLab Cryo-EM Network.

The CCI offers high-end microscopy techniques and competence for researchers in the various fields of life science, but also chemistry, physics and material science. The equipment includes several advanced laser scanning (confocal and multiphoton) microscopes, super-resolution and high content screening microscopy, as well as a GEMINI450 scanning electron microscope and the TALOS 120C transmission electron microscope equipped with Ceta detector (XYZ) and with cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) capabilities focused on single-particle screening. The cryo-EM sample preparation equipment includes a plunge freezer, glow discharge, sputter coater as well as high pressure freezing system. The scientific staff at the CCI assists researchers in the experimental designing and planning of microscopy experiments and provides the in-depth training for the operation of the microscopes, full sample preparation and for specific imaging techniques. Additionally, support is provided in the processing, rendering and analysis of the acquired datasets.

The CCI is now looking for an Expert in cryo-electron microscopy and structural biology with extensive experience in high resolution single-particle reconstruction, including sample optimisation, grid preparation and screening, data collection, the use of modern software for particle picking and classification, map generation, model building, structure validation. The post holder will become an integral part of the CCI team, bringing knowledge and expertise in structural biology and cryo-EM to complement the Facility’s existing room-temperature transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and advanced light microscopy skill-set. Duties will involve both routine methods and developing of new methods from single-particle cryo-EM and applying them to a diverse range of research projects, day-to-day maintenance and operation of the instruments, sample preparation and data processing and analysis. Activities may also include supporting other electron microscopy applications such as standard biological sample preparation for TEM and SEM.

 

Duties 

The successful candidate will work in the Centre for Cellular Imaging for advanced microscopy facility with: 1) in-house innovative structural biology technologies, with a focus on cryo-EM as a method for novel protein structure determination for challenging targets that are intractable via other structural biology techniques; 2) managing and optimization of the different cryo-EM grid sample preparation for single-particle workflows and cryo-EM screening. The post holder will  also be responsible for 3) operation and maintenance of the electron microscope and the equipment for cryo-EM sample preparation, including plunge freezing and high pressure freezing; 4) giving advice on the design of imaging experiments in order to optimize output and research activities; and should, 5) Conduct assessment prior to data collection: Perform preliminary image data quality evaluation, load samples and tune microscopes; 6) Contribute to the implementation of new innovative cryo-EM methods in order to meet with the users’ needs at the CCI, and in close collaboration with the single particle Cryo-EM National facility at SciLifeLab; 7) Guiding core facility users in purification and analysis of single proteins and protein complexes; 8) Perform general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory, and provide general lab support as needed; 9) The post holder will also participate in the teaching of practices/lectures for graduate and undergraduate courses.

 

Qualifications 

We are seeking an ambitious and service-oriented team player with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. The candidate shall be able to work both independently and as part of a team in the CCI and enjoy working in an international and highly collaborative team of scientists. The suitable candidate shall hold a PhD degree in structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, chemistry, or related scientific field and at least six years of relevant work experience in cryo-EM. Deep scientific expertise in structural biology and high-resolution structure determination is required. Extensive experience in cryo-EM preparation techniques for single-particle is highly desirable. Additional skills in cryo-EM tomography will be an advantage. The candidate shall be willing to expand his/her knowledge in new microscopy techniques and be ready to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment. Prior experience of working in a microscopy facility is a plus. Ability to manage workload and structure the work with short timelines, with good communication in English and organizational skills are essential. We are looking for an enthusiastic person with a research background who combines technical expertise with strong communication skills, who has a strong will to aid other researcher in their work, but also the motivation to work independently.

The School of Public Administration announces a vacant position for a postdoctoral fellow in the FORTE-funded research project “The materialization of changes - how built spaces drive, prevent and modify organizational changes in two Swedish university hospitals”. By studying how managerial ideas about reforming healthcare are received and reinterpreted by healthcare professions inside the hospitals, this project provides novel explanations to the well-known and recurring governance failures in healthcare management. The overall purpose of the research project is to explore how managerial strategies to reform public services by transforming built spaces are experienced, resisted, and negotiated by professions inside these organizational spaces. Theoretically, the project is positioned within public administration and organization theory, in particular the sub-field called organizational space literature which understands organizational spaces and materiality as guiding for and actively structuring human activities, rather than merely being an outcome of human actions. We are interested in broadening the empirical and theoretical scope of this project, and therefore welcome proposals that relates to the overall objective of this project but formulates independent research questions and has an independent methodological design. An empirical focus on public healthcare is advantageous but not required

Duties 

The postdoctoral fellowship aims to give the employee an opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and further qualifications after completing the doctoral degree. The person employed as a postdoctoral fellow will conduct research on 80 %, remaining 20 % will be devoted to teaching or administrative tasks within the School of Public Administration.

The main responsibility for the postdoctoral fellow is to conduct research, independently or in collaboration with the project leader, which contribute to the research project’s overall objective. Research tasks will involve data collection, analysis, and dissemination of results through scholarly journals and conferences. The Postdoc is expected to be an active and collaborative participant in the School of Public Administration’s activities during of the fellowship.

To be eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow, the applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country. Researcher in Climatology or Physical Geography

The Department of Earth Sciences has about 80 employees. We have Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Earth Sciences and
Geography and third-cycle education. Our strongest research areas lie within climatology, ecosystem sciences, petrology/geochemistry
and applied geoscience. The department's research strategy emphasizes further development of Earth System Science.

Project description

The researcher will join an ongoing project that explores the use of quantitative wood anatomy in reconstructions of past climate variations. Information on how the climate will change in the future is largely based on climate models where skill is judged based on how well they can predict climate variations from relatively short meteorological observations and longer proxy archives, such as tree rings. The link between proxy archives and climate models is currently based on relatively inexact analyses of tree rings and simple statistical transformations of natural archives to climate reconstructions. So far, climate models and climate reconstructions based on tree rings have systematic differences in which the natural archive has comparatively inflated medium and low frequency amplitude than models. We believe that this discrepancy is partly due to inaccurate tree-ring measurements where measurement series are also influenced by the tree's biological memory of the climate. In this ongoing project, we measure anatomical properties of trees that grow in highly temperature-restricted environments and compare and assimilate them with ensembles of climate models. This project combines and integrates skills that take analysis of tree rings to a new level of precision, applies new process-based transformation methods for climate reconstructions, and evaluates the conformity of model and climate reconstructions permeated by a deep understanding of the biological archive.

Duties

The researcher will work on developing and analysing wood anatomical data from living and dead trees of Picea engelmannii from southwestern Canada. This includes dating of the wood material, as well as automatic and manual editing of the cell measurements using the ROXAS program. These data will be studied, among other things, in relation to the trees' age, climate, and measurement resolution. The researcher will be responsible for quality control of data and statistical analyses, as well as the writing of publications in the project that presents the 1000-year long reconstruction of summer temperatures based on the wood anatomical data. In this regard, the researcher is expected to contribute expertise in dendroclimatology, quantitative wood anatomy and wood densitometry, as well as the application of process-based growth modeling in the context of climate reconstructions.

Qualifications

Doctoral degree in a relevant subject area, for example Physical Geography or Climatology. Previous publication of articles as first author in well-established international journals is a requirement. Excellent skills in handling large datasets, statistical analysis, and proficiency in computer programming are required. Previous experience in the analysis of wood anatomical data, proficiency in using the ROXAS editing program, and the ability to place analysis results in a biological and climatological context are crucial. The position requires the applicant to be able to communicate fluently (both in writing and verbally) in English.

The researcher will conduct research on Alzheimer’s disease. Zebrafish will also be used as a model.
