Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Arctic Marine Stress Ecology

Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow available at the Section for Aquatic Biology and Toxicology, Department of Biosciences, University of Oslo (on condition of external funding).

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who will join a research project funded by a Young Research Talent Grant from the Research Council of Norway. The project will focus on overwintering in Arctic zooplankton.

The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of 2.5 years 10% of which is devoted to required duties, usually in the form of teaching activities.

No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.

Project description / Development plan:

As part of the Young Research Talent grant, the available postdoc will conduct experiments, investigating the single and combined effects of marine heatwaves and ocean acidification on overwintering of Arctic Calanus copepods. The capacity to survive the long, dark, cold and unproductive winter is critical for most Arctic species. Many Arctic ectotherms have therefore evolved special adaptations to severe winter conditions by investment in large storage deposits combined with lowering metabolism to a minimum in winter. However, we do not know how multiple stressors may affect overwintering Arctic species. This is a critical period and failure in surviving winter can have ecological consequences for the entire ecosystem. This project will explore the physiological and omics mechanisms for direct, delayed, and transgenerational effects of marine heatwaves and ocean acidification on Arctic Calanus copepods. Activities in the project will include several field trips to collect Calanus copepods from Svalbard and long-term experiments over the winter period in the laboratory at the University of Oslo.

We seek a highly motivated, enthusiastic candidate that has a completed PhD degree (or other corresponding education equivalents to a Norwegian doctoral degree) in marine ecology, particularly molecular ecology. Candidates with experience in experiments with ocean acidification and publishing papers in leading journals are highly encouraged to apply.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

Host institution and partner institution:

The postdoc project and training will be based at the Aquatic Biology and Toxicology (AQUA), Department of Biosciences, University of Oslo, with collaboration with The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS).

The postdoc will be working in a large research environment with diverse expertise in marine ecology, ecotoxicology, terrestrial and soil ecotoxicology. Our research involves a range of trophic levels, from dissolved organic matter (DOM) feeders, zooplankton and fish to whales.

The postdoc will be supervised by Dr. Khuong V. Dinh, and co-supervised by Prof. Katrine Borgå and Prof. Ketil Hylland at the University of Oslo and Prof. Janne E. Søreide at The University Centre in Svalbard.

The position is affiliated to the research group “Knowledge, Learning and Governance in Higher Education and Work “(HEDWORK) at the Department of Education and the UiO:Energy Convergence Environments at the University of Oslo, Norway.

The EMPOWER project takes an interdisciplinary research and education perspective to investigate the role of electric vehicle batteries in enabling a sustainable net-zero energy transition in Norway. Norway aims at a net-zero energy system by 2050 and the decarbonisation of all transport segments is crucial. While batteries represent a central technology for zero-carbon transportation, they also pose complex socio-ecological problems. EMPOWER examines study the diversity of challenges (social, environmental, legal) found in the design, production, use, re-use, and recycling of batteries.

EMPOWER aims to:i) develop a common definition of sustainable batteries for mobility across industry and involved disciplines; ii) explore representations of this sustainability concept in EV production and utilization; iii) determine how interdisciplinary criteria impacts the design of net-zero energy systems; and iv) co-design educational offer for young people and early career researchers to facilitate their interdisciplinary understanding of battery-cantered research. Read more about the EMPOWER project on the project website.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to contribute to the EMPOWER project by researching interdisciplinary approaches, methods and designs for young peoples’ learning about sustainability in relation to EV battery use. This work will be conducted as part of work package 6, which examines how the interdisciplinary research team generates knowledge in collaboration; how this knowledge can become embedded in education curricula; and how young people reason and learn about sustainable EV battery use. The applicant should be familiar with and use a design-based approach to coordinate data collection and contact with participants in the empirical studies in wp6 (pupils aged 13-19).  The applicant is expected to work with data collection and analysis of data using either a qualitative, quantitative or mixed method approach framed by design-based research. In addition, the applicant is expected to participate in co-design meetings, joint project activities and take on tasks related to data management.

The announced postdoctoral position will be connected to the research group HEDWORK. The group comprises researchers with different interdisciplinary backgrounds and offers an internationally oriented and stimulating research environment, with a connection to research communities in higher education, learning sciences, academic development, and educational research worldwide.

More about the position

The position is part of a large, interdisciplinary research project Societal and environmental determinants of brain and cognition (AHeadForLife), funded by the University of Oslo: Life Sciences and led by Prof. Anders M. Fjell. The primary objective of the project is to uncover how interactions between the immediate environment, larger societal factors and genes shape cognition and social outcomes across the life course. Convergence environments are interdisciplinary research groups that will aim to solve grand challenges related to health and environment. They are funded by UiO's interdisciplinary strategic area UiO:Life Science.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in sociology (or related field, e.g. demography) quantitative social science methods, and an interest in both learning (more) about social science genetics and using administrative data for research.

Norwegian administrative data registers are linkable at the individual level and allow for the identification of family relationships across three generations. This makes it possible to estimate a broad set of statistical models exploiting different kinds of familial relationships (twins, siblings, cousins, uncles/aunts, grandparents). The fellow will use these data to better understand what role genetics and different types of environmental factors play for a wide range of outcomes such as cognition, education, family formation, health, and occupational careers. The project will develop novel statistical methods for this purpose, and also use existing methodologies from sociology, behavior genetics, and other fields. There is room for choosing and designing one's own research agenda within the project.

The postdoctoral fellow will be part of the interdisciplinary research group AHeadForLife. The fellow will work closely with Prof. Torkild Hovde Lyngstad, Dr. Ole Røgeberg (work package leader) and the other team members. We are especially interested in candidates who want to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment. We will have bi-weekly meetings with all project participants to ensure integration across disciplines.

At the Department of Sociology and Human Geography, the fellow will be part of the research group on Social Inequalities and Population Dynamics (SIPD), which provides a stimulating scientific environment in sociology/demography with regular seminars.

Qualification requirements and personal skills

Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in sociology, or demography. The doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing application date. Appointment is dependent on the dissertation and public defense of the doctoral dissertation being approved.
